SalonQP 2013: A Most Personal Exhibition Of Fine Watches, Remarkable Brands And Astoundingly Difficult Crafts
I can't really think of another time when I found a 3:40 am wake-up feel any easier than it did just a couple of days ago. On this cold Budapest morning I got up as fresh as scarcely ever before, checked all my gear one last time?- laptop, camera, chargers, lenses, flash, memory cards, batteries - and finally set off to have what I would call "my first watch exhibition experience." My destination was the 2013 SalonQP fine watch exhibition, held between the 7th and 9th of November, in the Saatchi Gallery in the fabulous city of London.?Saying that I was excited would be a massive understatement. Although I was familiar with this annual event - we at watches-dealer have covered it several times - the thought of seeing so many special watches "in the metal," at the same place, at the same time had me counting down the days and weeks before the event started.Part of the list of exhibitors placed just by the elevators; The Fine Watch Room with its main exhibition piece in the centre and ano
Oak & Oscar Burnham Review
Over the last couple of years Oak & Oscar has slowly, but surely built up a solid following. Many brands do this, but what makes it particularly interesting in this case is that founder Chase Fancher started this process a couple years before actually having a watch for sale. In fact, we first met the Chicago native not on US soil, but in Basel, at one of the horrendously over-priced coffee bars within the shows halls. It was there that Chase first told us about his brand, his initial watch, the Burnham, and his goal to make something great.Fast forward and Oak & Oscar have become one of the more talked about micro brands of the year. Between a strong following of friends and fans from the #watchfam and #redbarcrew scenes on instagram, his brand got off to a very strong start. He also participated in our Wind-Up: NYC event, where his booth was regularly full of intrigued watch enthusiasts. Before getting to the watch, part of what set Oak & Oscar apart was that he wasn't try
The Value Proposition: Laco Chronograph Watch "New York," Offering Better Value Than Rent
For the first chronograph covered in The Value Proposition, we take a look at a solid offering from a brand we haven’t covered too much here on HODINKEE: Laco. Founded in 1925, the German company gained fame for its pilot’s watches produced in the 1940s. Its current range of watches includes a number of chronographs inspired by the brand’s historic models, with a few modern design updates. If you’ve been looking for a chronograph with traditional looks, but without faux patina or dramatic detailing, the Laco Chronograph Watch “New York” could be a good bet. It also doesn’t hurt that it comes in under $3,000. 2 OF 6 The Valjoux 7750 is a veritable workhorse movement that can be found in many modern chronograph watches. First, a bit about the movement: the Laco Chronograph Watch “New York” uses a Valjoux 7750. This self-winding calibre was introduced in 1974, using a coulisse-lever design in lieu of the more traditi
Imitation is the highest form of flattery?
Just watched that Apple watch video. Is it just me or do the hands look like those on the 5711 and other Nautilus models? Also, Deployant clasp...where have I seen that before? More than just a passing resemblance. I wouldn't be surprised if Jony Ive owns a 5711. Probably white dial.
