In-Depth: The A. Lange & S?hne 1815 Chronograph, Revisited
One of the more interesting comparisons we’ve done in recent months was in the latest edition of Three On Three, in which we compared three really strong watches – all hand-wound, all chronographs, and all with in-house movements. As we noted then, in-house hand-wound chronograph movements in wristwatches have actually been something of a rarity in European watchmaking; chronographs are surprisingly challenging to engineer (I remember Cartier’s Carole Forestier once telling me that a tourbillon was actually much easier to do than a good chronograph movement) and in general, if you wanted to do a chronograph wristwatch you’d get a movement from a specialist supplier like Nouvelle Lemania. One of the biggest surprises to many watch enthusiasts, therefore, was the introduction by A. Lange & Söhne, in 1999, of the Datograph, which instantly became one of the most talked about watches in the world, and which was not only an in-house chronograph, but an in-ho
Breguet Clock With Docking Pocket Watch Re-Sets Record For A Clock At Auction, Fetching $6.8 Million
Yesterday Sotheby's New York held its Important Watches and Clocks sale at their Upper East Side headquarters. The highlight of the day was undoubtedly the record-setting sale of the Duc D'Orlans Breguet Sympathique clock from 1835, a stunning clock with a docking pocket watch - yes, a docking pocket watch.Just looking at the Duc D'Orlans, you can tell you're staring at something impressive. The case is decorated with beautiful ormolu-mounted red tortoise shell, it stands at nearly two feet tall, and the amount of gold sculpture is staggering. But it's the little repeating watch perched on top that really makes the Duc D'Orlans special.?Abraham-Louis Breguet wanted to tackle the problem of watch winding, and this is one of his finest achievements in the arena. While in exile in Switzerland during the French Revolution, Breguet conceived of the Sympathique system. At the bottom of the pocket watch are three tiny holes. When docked in the gold cradle atop the parent clock, these holes
Advice on my next AP purchase
Hello TRF Members,I currently own the ROO platinum chrono (44). I love it. Awesome wrist presence, but it is a tad heavy. I have the following on order & due in soon. ROO 26405CE.00.A002CA.02 (44 Black/gold) & the RO 15400 white. I have a 8 1/4 wrist so the 15202 (39) is too small. What are your thoughts on my next purchase?I'm thinking RO perp calendar in stainless/blue, but I appreciate the wisdom of the board!
SMPc accuracy questions
Hi all, My new SMPc 41, blue dial, bond, is about two months old. The watch initially ran at about +4.2-+5.0 second per day, which I was fine with of course. Within specs. Now into my third month, it seems to be running even better, at +2.2 second per day. Which I am super happy with. I want to say I AM NOT COMPLAINING! I just some questions.. should a brand new watch vary this much within the first 2 months? Most watches I have owned, Rolex, usually stay pretty solid at one deviation for a long time. Again, just curious to ask some other experts their thoughts. Thanks and cheers to Friday.
