It is rare for one man to design every component of a watch's case, dial and movement. Peter Speake-Marin’s new Thalassa is such a watch. The harmonious design incorporates Peter’s trademark elements, and so is instantly recognizable as his. The blued�\steel of the outer dial, hands and seconds wheel create a nautical ambiance which inspired the name “Thalassa”, a sea goddess from Greek mythology and the personification of the Mediterranean Sea. The case is Peter’s iconic “Piccadilly” design, rendered in 18K white gold. The basic shape was inspired by the cases used to house prototype movements Peter worked with early in his career. I knew it was coming and I am glad that it is finally here. Similar to brands such as Jaeger-LeCoultre, Girard-Perregaux makes (or made) really good sport watches that it does not really market that much. You just sort of need to know about them. For a while, the last remaining sport watch Girard-Perregaux made was the Sea Hawk - a high-end diver with a personality complex not knowing whether it was a serious sport watch meant for action or a luxury lifestyle watch meant for cocktail hour. And when was the last time you even heard about the Laureato collection?At the end of 2012, Girard-Perregaux brings them both back into the limelight under a single collection - the Hawk. While the Laureato collection is retired for the time being, its design DNA has been incorporated into the new Sea Hawk and Chrono Hawk models. You can see the familiar design of the lugs and the octagonal bezel in there. Of course, it has been mashed together with elements from the last generation Sea Hawk models.

Somehow, I think that the watch designers at Casio enjoy their jobs.I've never met or spoken to one, but from seeing a succession of Casios over the years, and the relentless way that they keep improving, every single time, I have to think that they like what they do. Case-in-point today: the new PAG-240-1 Pathfinder. Casio has done a lot of Pathfinders over the years, and every single time the come up with new features, killer prices and manage to improve the user interface in small ways to boot.This Pathfinder is mid-line for Casio, lacking only the radio-set functionality of the more expensive versions. It still has solar power (which I consider an essential feature for an outdoor watch), alarms, countdown timer, world time, altimeter, barometer, compass, altimeter, thermometer, trend graphs and an EL backlight.
