The Restoration Of The Girard-Perregaux Caliber 350, The Most Important Quartz Watch You've Never Heard Of
Quartz. We pretend it's not there, but it defines the modern world of watchmaking. And yet, once upon a time, it was the new kid on the block an unknown quantity whose influence had yet to be felt. We're very pleased to present to you one of the most important and influential watches you've probably never heard of: the Girard-Perregaux Caliber 350. Our watchmaker-in-residence, Aaron Berlow, takes us inside this groundbreaking movement, which influences quartz timekeeping design to this day, and shows us what makes it tick. Ed. Asking many watchmakers what they think about quartz is like asking a die-hard American conservative what they think about government regulation. There is a visceral hatred of this technology that was both so much more accurate and so much cheaper than mechanical movements. It very nearly turned Swiss watchmaking into American watchmaking (that is to say, obsolete.) This disdain has led to some amazing innovations and some incr
Incoming....its gold...its big...its mine!!!
First and foremost, I wanted to thank everyone for providing their views and suggestions when I was debating which watch to get...whether it was the RG Schumi / RB2 , the Ti RB2, or Ti RM11...what it really came down to is minimizing cash flow at this time given I've added a couple of other big pieces to the collection the last couple of months.I was walking around the mall today with the kids. Told my wife i was going to visit the RM boutique for a few minutes. Stopped by the AP boutique on the way...and there she was in the display window...the 44mm RG ROO Ceramic.I've always thought this was the perfect / reasonable upgrade for my RGRC.Tried it all, discussed approximate discounts, and told them to hold it for a few hours while I ran a few errands (take my RGRC to the second hand shops to sell).Got quite a decent price for the RGRC and got a great discount on the retail on this piece...too good of a deal to pass up. So here she is!!!Just a quick wrist shot...will post better photos
Galactic Models--Blue different.
Hi All, I noticed the Galactic 36 blue dial is Gun Blue whereas the 41 is Metallica Blue. Has anyone seen these side by side?Do you have a dial in either of these 2 colours you can post a pic of? If you happen to go to an AD, can you take a look & snap a pic of either one? LOLThere are 2 AD's near me & neither have either of these in stock. The one saleslady & her co-worker brought out 2 watches, each with different blue dials telling me that the galactic was somewhere between this one & that one. Ya...ok. She seemed put off when I said I wasn't going to spend that kind of money & not see it. Idiot. Then I said...I can buy a Rolex for this money. She didn't appreciate the comment. I followed that up with, I was able to try on & visually look at the Rolex not have 2 salespeople estimate the colour of the dial. Anyway...just curious if anyone can keep an eye out for these 2 if they should pop in to an AD.
