Perrelet Introduces the Turbine XL
Last year Perrelet pumped up its iconic (and patented) double-rotor design with the Turbine, a distinctive 44mm re-imagining that transformed the dial-side rotor into a spinning 12-bladed titanium dynamo. Not one to rest on its laurels, for 2010 Perrelet launches the new 50mm Turbine XL. The new XL is offered in three executions: full DLC steel, a more sporty titanium with DLC steel bezel, and the original combination of the limited 77-piece series, in pink gold with DLC steel bezel. DLC stands for Diamond Light Coating, or Diamond-Like Carbon. DLC is a virtually unscratchable coating with a hardness of 4000 to 5000 HV (Vickers), about half as hard as pure diamond. This coating has been used for 20 years in other domains, including aeronautics and Formula 1, and it was recently introduced into the watch industry. Only a small number of brands use the coating because of its high price and technical production difficulties, involving a pigmentation process, oven treatment and final mat o
Christopher Ward C9 5-Day SS Chronometer Review
When Christopher Ward first announced the C9 5-Day SS Chronometer (SS for small seconds), I was immediately very excited. It took their awesome in-house 5-day chronometer movement, the SH21, modified it to be hand wound and feature small seconds at 6, put it in a modestly sized case, and styled it in the classic aesthetic of Marine Chronometers. In doing so, it combined a bunch of things I really liked into a very aesthetically pleasing package. To make things even more appealing, they gave it a very compelling price point of $1,780. Not cheap, but a solid value for what the watch offers. After all, no one else is offering anything close to a 5-day COSC movement at this price. The watch is also was a bit of an interesting departure for the brand. While they've had the C9 line going for some time, the Marine Chronometer aesthetic is a change, but a very welcome one that makes a lot of sense for the brand. Other C9 watches are almost Art Deco in styling, but this watch speaks to a British
Victorinox Updates the Inox with 3 New Models
When Victorinox first announced the INOX line two years ago, we couldn't help but be impressed. Engineered from the ground up to be nigh-on indestructible, the original INOX survived everything from a 12G impact to being run over by a 64 ton tank all while packing that durability into a handsome, sporty package. For 2016, Victorinox has taken the concept even further with a pair of additions, the INOX Professional Diver and the INOX Leather.Leading off the pair, the INOX Professional Diver takes its pedigree for sturdiness all the way to the deep ocean while bringing in its own unique flair. The hefty 45mm case is pure modern tool watch, with thick wide-set lugs and a sharply beveled stainless steel unidirectional bezel helping to offset some of the visual mass. Topping all this off is a tall double-domed sapphire crystal.? A large blue SuperLuminova pip at 12 gives easy grip for rotating, and just as importantly makes an instantly visible reference underwater. While the case of the IN
