MB&F HM2 Black & Red SV Final Edition Watches
The MB&F Horological Machine Number 2 has enjoyed a really rich life. The 'wrist rectangle' is now going into its final limited edition production with two new models. These are the HM2 Black SV and Red SV. "SV" stands for Sapphire Vision, and are related to the original HM2 Sapphire Vision watch that I discussed here - and had a real-life image of here. The whole point of the Sapphire Vision watch was the massive sapphire crystal that made up the front plate of the piece. The crystals were ungodly expensive to make and a tortuous trial in patience as many would break in the manufacturing process. One you make the crystal and it is stable, they are relatively strong, but the weakness is in making them. Now MB&F revisits the SV concept with these two new, slightly more showy models. I am not going to go into full technical specs about the piece - because I have already done that, and they are below. The movement is the sweet looking caliber specially designed for the HM2 with 349
Sinn 900 Flieger Watch: The "Big Aviator Chronograph"
Now with "advanced Entspiegelungstechnik!" That word actually just means anti-reflective (AR) sapphire crystal coating, but it sounds superbly Germanic and fitting right? To be released in the late Spring of 2009, this new Sinn Model 900 series watch is pretty good looking, and the size is up to 44mm, which is considered "big" for Sinn (most case sizes are between 38mm -41mm wide). Like the other 900 models, this watch uses a base ETA Valjoux 7750 movement with a UTC hand modification. That gives it a full 12 hour chronograph, date, time, and 24 hour hand (that is independently adjustable to use as a second timezone if desired). Unlike the other 900 model watches, this Flieger is a lot more simple looking and attractive. Looking like cousin of the Sinn 757, the 900 is all about pilot watch duty. If it is suitable for day to day wear, it does so without caring. The rear of the watch has a metric to standard conversion chart of some basic units of measurement that you might be interested
Planet Ocean first impressions
So I just received a new 2201.51 with 2500D movement. It feels a bit smaller than my ExpII 42mm. It wears more like a 40mm to me. Love the case shape and proportions. The new 8500 PO felt too thick for a 42mm. I'm a sucker for matte dials as it just looks more classy too me. The orange numbers pop off this dial. My only complaint would be the bracelet. Not really impressed with this one. The newer Rolex bracelets just feel and fit better than this one. Even the older rolex bracelets fit perfect with the micro-adjustments. I may just order an isofrane to go with this one. As for the 2500D, I guess time will tell how durable and reliable it will be. Overall, a great value at it's street price.
5164 Aquanaut vs 15202 AP Jumbo
I have an option of trading my 5167 for an AP Jumbo (plus a bit of cash). But arriving in a few weeks is a 5164 that I have first dibs on (and have been waiting for). Trade the 5167 for the Jumbo or the 5164?I own a 5711 so perhaps the jumbo will be doubling up. And have owned a 15400 in the past and while I appreciated the craftsmanship I didn't love it (too blingy and large). In fact the only AP I'm interested in is the Jumbo. The 5167 I've warmed too considerably after a slow start but I also like the slightly larger dimensions and the complication of the 5164.Thanks!
