Throwback To The Past: it is 1977, quartz watches are still less than 10 years old; it's the year Star Wars hit theaters for the first timeand you are actually looking at, not a piece of science fiction, but what is nothing less than the most technically advanced wristwatch ever produced. Whether you love or hate what electronics have meant in watchmaking, there's no doubt that the development of electrical and electronic timepieces, from very early electrical pendulum clocks of the early 19th century to the first quartz clocks of the 1920s, to experimental electromechanical watches in the 1950s and '60s, changed horology forever. Today the word "smart watch" is one we all know, but this was the very first of that breed, from nearly 40 years ago. Whatever you may have thought the earliest smart watch was, I bet you were not expecting this marvelously geeky instrument (especially not from a vintage enthusiast who covers your weekly Bring A Loupe!). Cosc Certificate Arrives . . . interesting . . .
I ordered the COSC Certificate for my 36.2mm Railmaster (.rolexforums/showthread.php?t=114083) awhile back. It arrived today.Some folks have complained that Omega now charges 50 Swiss Francs ($48.47) for the Certificate. As you can see on the envelope, Omega pays 11.50 Swiss Francs just in postage. Now, while I don't think 50 Swiss Francs is a great bargain, considering Omega has to order the Certificate, probably pay COSC a little something for it (after all, if it was free Omega would probably provide it routinely with the watch), and then ship it to us in the USA, the price doesn't seem outrageous either.Interestingly, in studying the figures for the movement in various positions, it confirms what I had noticed by trial and error. The watch likes to rest on its back at night and absolutely does not like resting on the 9 o'clock with the 3 o'clock up (really slows down). Hello all,As we all know, things occasionally work out unexpectedly. I woke up yesterday intending to go to work for a few hours, but as the week left me tired, added to a slight hangover, I decided not to go. I was prepared to stay in and relax, when I remembered an employee at my local Rolex AD suggesting I check out another store about an hour away from me. With nothing better to do, and a fairly nice day out, I thought of going to see what Patek watches they might have. I've been checking out the the 3700, 5711/1A and 5167A but was yet to see any of these in the metal. Still, an hour is a long drive, so I decided to give them a call, hoping there was a chance there was at least a 5167A I could see to make the trip worth it. To my utter astonishment, the guy says he has a 5711/1A and a 5167A that arrived that very morning. He said it was available, and he sounded almost as shocked as I was.
