F.P. Journe Presents the Nouvelle Octa Lune
During SIHH in Geneva last month, independent watch brand F.P. Journe introduced updated versions of the moon-phase watch in its Octa Collection. The Nouvelle Octa Lune is available in two case materials. Its dial has been rearranged from that of its predecessor, and it’s now available in a larger size.The F.P. Journe Octa Collection to date has consisted of seven watches, including a world timer and an annual calendar. Many of the watches make use of off-center displays for their various functions. Still, the dial design remains simple with good legibility. The watches have also made use of moderate sizes: most of the models come in 38-mm and 40-mm case diameters.For 2015, Journe made slight alterations to the layout of the original Octa Lune. Porsche Design Rolls Out New Watches For Its 40th Anniversary
The Porsche Design Studio, founded by Porsche 911 designer Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, marks four decades this year. To celebrate, Porsche Design is releasing four new watches: a limited-edition model of its very first product, the Chronograph I, and three new additions to its Flat Six collection.The limited-edition Chronograph I features a matte silver-gray case and bracelet, replacing the matte-black color scheme of the original from 1972. Most of the other details remain the same, including the black dial; the type, hands and bar indices filled with white luminous substance; and the red central chronograph hand. It is identified as an anniversary edition by the “40Y” immediately beneath the day/date windows at 3 o’clock. The watch, which is limited to 911 pieces worldwide, comes packaged in a special collectors’ box labeled “40Y of Iconic Products” along with another limited-edition Porsche Design anniversary item, a pair of P’8478 sunglass

Certina DS 1 Chrono Automatique Watch
Last year Basel saw the Certina DS 1 release to a lot of happy watch lovers. It was a entry level priced handsome watch with the build quality and parts that the Swatch Group is able to provide (usually pretty good). Quality is a bit up from Hamilton, another Swatch Group brand. The standard DS 1 watch has an ETA 2824-2 movement, while this new chronograph version will have a Valjoux 7750. This might be one of the best priced watches to be available with the highly desirable work-horse automatic chronograph movement.Still with the Tag Heuer Carrera look, the Certina DS 1 Chrono Automatique (Automatic if you aren't in Europe!) takes everything I love about the Valjoux 7750 movement and emphasizes on its sober tool-like demeanor. That isn't to say the watch is without beautiful good looks, but it is more handsome than flashy. You'll notice that Certina chose to include two different types of pushers for the chronograph. Yesterday, I walked into Feldmar's, a truly great AD in Los Angeles. Browsing the Breitling display case, I spotted a handsome Navitimer...Not just any Navitimer, but a limited edition Cosmonaute, a tribute to the 50th anniversary of the 1962 Mercury mission in which Astronaut Scott Carpenter orbited the earth three times aboard the Aurora 7 capsule. During that historic flight, he wore a manual wound Breitling Navitimer, but with a 24 hour display.The 2012 Cosmonaute is a also manual winding watch, with Breitling's own B02 movement and a 24 hour display. The Aurora 7 insignia is engraved on the case back. This particular Cosmonaute had the black leather strap with the deployment clasp. Very handy and extremely comfortable.Around 1973, as a little boy, I stood at my father's side in a New York City Jewelry store on the Upper West Side while he purchased an Omega Speedmaster Professional.
