Can You Be A Serious Watch Collector On A Budget?
Sponsored PostTo read the reports from SIHH (Salon International de la Haute Horologerie) or the latest auction headlines, you would think that watch collecting is the preserve of the super-rich. Prices with four, five or even six zeros seem to be the norm and those non-millionaires amongst us can feel reduced to observer status only.So what can you buy if your pockets are not so deep? The good news is that there is a lot of fun to be had in the shallow end. There are "serious" watches of significance that can be bought for less than the price of a quartz fashion piece. The restless drive for innovation pursued by watch companies has left a trail of "firsts" and these are a good place to start for the cost-conscious collector. An example of the first ever automatic wristwatch, the Harwood from the late 1920s can be bought for less than 300.The technological turbulence of the 1950s and 60s provides fertile ground for "firsts." Minuteman Watches: Military Style Built In The USA
The original idea behind Minuteman watches (quite appropriately named) was for the pieces to be assembled in the United States by disabled war veterans. It was a good idea, given that disabled veterans are a laudable group to work with/benefit, and it is a great goal to give even a few who are out of work, work. Minuteman tried to work with an organization that deals with disabled veterans, but it didn't work out. I think it was pretty nasty. Nevertheless, Minuteman did not want to abandon the idea of making watches here in the US. So the end result is that some portion of the sale of the watches will go to a charity that benefits disabled veterans, and the watch will be produced in Ohio by LUM-TEC.More specifically, for the first round of production, a percentage of the profits (not sure how much) will go to the Gary Sinise foundation (I have to wonder if that has to do with the fact that he played a disabled veteran in Forest Gump). After that I think the brand will evaluate how well
AP bringing YG back into the game
Yellow Gold watches are often viewed as old fashioned, to the extent that the majority of high end sports watch have simply replaced their YG models with RG. The past two years saw some resurgence of this and I am glad to see AP releasing its 42inch Royal Oak Offshore Chronograph ref 26470 in YG. A thing of beauty...

Remarkable Similarities
these two manufacturers used in their color schemes - Grey, Black, Silver and certainly iconic blue. I did not notice this until the two pieces happen to end up right next to each other... Quite interesting to say the least.
