Ulysse Nardin is one of the few high-watchmaking maisons in the modern era to produce watches with jaquemarts �� tiny automatons mounted on a watch dial that strike the hours on a bell. The brand’s latest, debuting at Baselworld 2016, is the Ulysse Nardin Hourstriker “Horse,” a limited edition of 28 pieces paying tribute to one of the most majestic of animals.The watch �� which follows up other notable jaquemart timepieces from UN, such as 2013’s Carnival of Venice and last year’s Hannibal Minute Repeater �� has a genuine black onyx dial and is available in either an 18k rose gold or platinum case, each measuring 43 mm in diameter. Positioned between 10 and 12 o’clock, and 1 and 3 o’clock, are two hand-carved, equine jaquemarts, which move together in synchronicity with the sounding of the watch’s chimes, activated by a hammer striking a gong. Mondaine found themselves in a tricky situation. They produced and have produced for sometime one of the most iconic and easily recognizable watches on the market; the Swiss Railway Watch. The image of that dial, with its bold black markers and large red lollipop hand is synonymous with the brand, even though the design itself was from decades earlier and is still in use as the official Swiss Rail clock. The situation though doesn't have to do with that watch, it has to do with what comes next. Like a band with a great first album, how do they follow up? More Omega boutique openings
You may have heard that Omega is expanding their boutiques worldwide. One opened in a upscale mall a few months ago and I was invited to their grand opening. Got to know a well trained associate and drooled over their watches on display.As I was chatting with my favorite associate, she mentioned that with all of the boutiques opening in the US, people have been sending their watches in for servicing instead of going to their ADs. She indicated that with the sudden influx of watches in for repairs and/or servicing, their NJ service center has stopped taking into new requests as they are backlogged and want to ensure their quaility control is not taking a back seat in the haste of turning requests around quicker.Not sure what's everyone's thoughts on the boutique model and its effect on the AD channel especially family owned businesses. One thing for sure, the ability to negotiate a discount in a boutique will be near impossible.
