Sotheby’s Geneva Sale Brings $8.7 Million
Sotheby's May 15 Geneva sale presented pieces representing five centuries of watchmaking, from 1580 to the present day. The top price was realized by a very rare Patek Philippe ref. 2499 which fetched $815,637, and by one of the most exclusive examples of a stainless steel Rolex Daytona Paul Newman with inverted lines, which brought $233,150. All totaled, the sale yielded $8,753,568 including buyers’ premiums.The top-selling lot, number 185, was a yellow gold Patek Philippe chronograph wristwatch with perpetual calendar, moon phases and tachometer scale. First sold on December 18, 1962, it sold within the pre-sale estimate.The Paul Newman Daytona, lot 280, is an extremely rare example with inverted lines and an unusual signature on the dial featuring Oyster on the third line after Rolex and Cosmograph . I think there are several points where these pieces crossroads and several where they diverge. AP Diver/ PP Aquanaut Cross points -Rubber Strap-Entry level (similar price )-Swim adequate -Comfortable to wear-Good Resale (it might be better for PP, don't know)-Great Lumen-Bezels are prone to scratch (not sure if one is more prone than the other)AP Diver/PP Aquanaut diverging points:- One is obviously a Diver with more WR- AP has more weight/wearing presence vs Patek is more elegant- PP has transparent case back to see the movement, AP not- AP has an inner rotating bezel to measure time elapse, PP not- AP has 60 hrs power Reserve vs PP 45 hrs- AP case size is bigger (42X13.8 mm vs 40X9 mm)Not sure about replacement rubber price but I think Patek strap might be cheaper. Also 3120 movement has history of running fast but from what I heard is not an issue anymore.But at the end of the day which one would you take home

question re: warranty
I purchased my first PAM (388) not too long ago (great transaction). It's a year old and has a year left of the warranty. After 3 weeks it stopped running (just stopped....) Despite winding, checking the positions etc it would not start again. I sent it to the Dallas repair facility (after speaking to them). The customer service was wonderful. But now I got the written estimate and they said they recommended a $260 maintenance service (but said the finding was that the movement accuracy was within specifications). I need to call them tomorrow for more clarification, but wouldn't it still be covered under warranty? And if the findings were that it's running within specs, why would it need a maintenance service after a year? I'll find out if they got it running again but I was curious what people's thoughts were about this. You can pm if you'd like. I did send the warranty booklet with the watch. hoping it was just an error. Thanks in advance for any information or thoughts (or advice).
