Think about this for a moment: before the 1880's, there were hundreds of time zones within the United States, with towns all across the country adhering to their own standard of "local time." This confusing system was a relic of an America before efficient transportation networks, when there wasn't much need for a centrally regulated, uniform system. The advancement of the railroad system in the late 1800's necessitated a change to a more standard system, and this short excerpt from the upcoming PBS series "How We Got to Now" demonstrates just how confusing things were before then �C and how essential timekeeping is to keep modern society up and running.
My Experience at the Royal Oak 40th Anniversary Exhibition @ Singapore
Set in the exotic venue of the historic Tanjong Pagar Railway Station, the Royal Oak 40th Anniversary Exhibition came to the last leg of its world tour in Singapore from 10 - 14 Oct 2012. Thanks to AP, Timezone and my AD, my partner and I were very fortunate to be invited to the cocktail receptions to witness and participate in the wonderful celebration of one of the most iconic horology creations in our time. Naturally, the highlight of the exhibition was the 100 iconic Royal Oak timepieces and invaluable memorabilia dating back to the beginning of the 70s. However, we were equally fascinated by the exciting atmosphere, artistic deco, and the wonderful cuisines and live performances. Of course, for a watch enthusiast, the best part for me was definitely the opportunity to interact with the watchmakers at the Workshop! People are always teling me that watches are much cheaper in the Carribean, but where exactly are these great Omega AD exactly? Do they even exist? I may go on a vacation in the new year and grab a watch at the same time. Any help would be appreciated. PM's welcome. thanks.
