Dominique Loiseau Dead: Master Watchmaker Leaves Strong Legacy
Sad news today as Swiss/French watchmaker Mr. Dominique Loiseau has passed away, Gregory Pons at Business Montres reports. He was just 64 years old. Still relatively unknown to many people, Loiseau was one of the venerable geniuses of modern watchmaking, able not only to restore incredible and complex works from the past, but invent the word's most complicated watches of today.I first encountered Dominique a couple of years ago at Baselworld upon the announcement of his new eponymous brand "Loiseau." His debut watch was the 1f4 that we offered a hands-on look here. The plan was to produce just two a year, and the 1f4 was to be the most complicated watch in the world. The double-sided uber-watch was a mere taste of the man's accomplishments. More recently, it was announced that he signed on with Girard-Perregaux for a series of unspecified projects related to the introduction of new mechanical watch technologies (and of course products). SIHH Rewind: A Week On The Wrist With The Baume & Mercier Clifton 10057 Complete Calendar
Baume & Mercier is one of the more wallet-friendly brands that shows at SIHH and last year released the entirely new Clifton collection. The most complicated of the Clifton watches is the 10057 Complete Calendar, a modern take on a style the was at the height of popularity in the 1940s and 50s. The Clifton Complete Calendar got our attention and we strapped it on for a full A Week On The Wrist review back in May. Click through for a ton of live photos, a brief history of the calendar watch, and our complete thoughts on this budget-conscious triple calendar.
Omega in Space Video
I was watching this video and couldn't help noticing how loose he is wearing his watch. It spins around kind of funny in zero G. At 6:02 there is a nice closeup of the watch - a second gen X-33 .youtube/watch?v=7Qw0ykbOt6I
The First Sighting of a Patek Philippe 5270 G
Stopping by the local AD, I was very lucky to see my first 5270G in person. Words cannot describe it.
Wall Street Journal on trouble in Swiss watch industry
I thought yesterday's WSJ piece on the Swiss watch industry was fascinating. It's behind a paywall, but here are some excerpts (it's a long feature article in the Business & Finance section):GENEVAYou're 25 years old, bask-ing in the glow of your first big job pro-mo-tion and a hefty raise. Why not splurge on a big-ticket item?Your fa-ther might have bought a fancy Swiss watch. But the thought doesn't oc-cur to youfor most of your life, you've used your cell-phone to check the time. In-stead, you book a get-away to Costa Rica, which you doc-u-ment ex-ten-sively on In-sta-gram.Swiss watch-mak-ing ex-ec-u-tive Jean-Claude Biver wants to change that think-ing. From his perch at lux-ury con-glom-er-ate LVMH Mo?t Hen-nessy Louis Vuit-ton, the 68-year-old has seen younger gen-er-a-tions drift away from his cen-turies-old in-dus-try. He is on a mis-sion to get them in-ter-ested in watches, be-fore it's too late. It's the first time we have young peo-ple not buy-ing watches, says Mr. Bi
