Auction Watch: July 18th Deals To Be Had At The Fellows Auction
The following timepiece auction analysis post is by Chris Meisenzahl. He is a long-time watch enthusiast and daily Speedmaster Pro wearer. He blogs at The Pretense of Knowledge and can be followed on Twitter at twitterwatches-dealer/speedmaster.Fellows is a UK auction house, established in 1876. For this auction the estimate range is a fairly reasonable £200 - £50,000. Clearly not pocket change, but there are dozens of pieces in there for a person looking for a deal, or just filling out a themed collection.I see that the most expensive (that is, expected to bring the most money) item in the auction is a Rolex with a range of $61,600.00 - $77,000.00. It’s lot #486, a “platinum automatic Oyster Perpetual Day-Date bracelet watch circa 2006.?But here’s the problem, the thing is covered with about 4.0ct’s worth of diamonds (see pic)! I’m sure all aBlogtoRead readers realize this isn’t a watch so much as a piece of jewelry. So we’ll move on. 😉If you’re a new collector or just
Wary About Buying A Watch Sight Unseen Online? Photoshop It To Your Wrist!
All the time we spend looking at watches online will never give us a clear indication of how a watch is going to look on our wrist, which is one of the most important factors in buying a watch. Several times I have nervously opened up a watch box to see the new watch I've never seen before, but just purchased. My hope is that the watch looks good on me, and is what I expected. Thankfully enough, I've never been disappointed. In fact, I am usually pleasantly surprised. Regardless, for many weary watch buyers, the personal look of a watch is of the utmost importance. The most obvious solution to this dilemma is to go into a watch store and try the watch on. For most of us, this is not an option as we do not reside near a retail location selling the watches we want, nor is a retail location even available. Without this option we resort to the extremes of caveat emptor, and gamble on taste and style. However, this might be less of an issue with a clever sales tactic I recently learned of. W
Polar Plaisted Expedition Speedmaster
Has anyone seen this on the 'Bay?.ebay/itm/SCARCE-OMEGA...item20bfd2c64bAccording to seller, they have documentation from Omega that it is one of four Speedmasters given to the expedition crew. Interesting history, but wonder if that history will bring anything close to the buy now price! Will be interesting to see what happens, if sold through the 'Bay.Does anyone have any sales history of other famous Speedmasters, such as those documented to have been worn during space flight?
5270 Daily wear?
Hi all,Simple question really. Does anyone know how a watch like a 5270 holds up to daily wear?I'm not talking about scratching the case, more how the movement etc holds up to constant use?I'm looking to buy a GMT BLNR. One of the reasons is from everything I've read and the conversations I've had it seems that these watches can be worn for years, they sound fairly bulletproof. How does something like a 5270 compare to this? It costs more than ten times as much and is from one of the best names out there, but are they too delicate for more than occasional wear? Could you wear it day in day out for a lifetime?I would love to hear your thoughts. J
Anyone receiving James Cameron deep sea?
So with the new year we've seen lots of LVCs, BLNR, skydwellers, Daytona's and SD43 but I haven't seen any JC incomings!!Am I missing something? Is it really that hated? Or is it true it's being discontinued?I love that watch way more than the SD43 and have been trying to get my hands on one after I passed on one a couple of months ago
