Top 10 Watches Of Baselworld 2013
Ariel & James inspecting new ceramic watches with Rado.First, a small Basel recap: if you are interested in watch industry business then my report from Baselworld 2013 is simple. The watch industry has anticipated a slowdown in business and growth from China for the last few years and the projections are true. While Chinese money is still important, China isn't exactly a growing market and many Chinese buyers are purchasing outside of China in places such as the US and Europe (where sometimes surprisingly, taxes on luxury goods are cheaper). This means that the luxury industry is once again focusing on the Western world and traditional luxury hot spots such as the Middle East, Russia, and the world's hot vacation spots (that still attract money). Business as usual in the world of glitz and status is go where the money is which is once again the primary objective of those who claim to make the best watches in the world. The good news is that new watches in 2013 are better than ever,
Manufacture Royale Opera Time-Piece Watch
Beat me with a stick! I just had to plod through Manufacture Royale's nine page long bloody press release - only to have reasserted what they mention in the first few lines; that they are "unashamedly elitist." Wipe my brow and hand me an ol' timey hallucinogenic absinthe, because I need to lay back in a hammock on a steamship and read some Jules Verne to appreciate this steampunk mechanaut.Oh how right it would be for the good people behind the conception of this watch to redo their text and branding on the watch. It is a cool thing, and the overgrown child in my loves this oddity - but they really need to take it down a few notches. I kid you not: in a nutshell, the brand would have you believe that this watch not only sets the bar upon which all future watches must be judged, but also claims that according to the designer this watch release is one step closer to realizing a dream of utopia. Please calmly take an axe to my forehead - for I cannot believe this.Ok, let's get back to th

Hands-On: With The Bulgari Octo Maserati, A Limited Edition Column-Wheel Chronograph With Lacquer And Champlev Enamel Dial
Usually when big brands present co-branded watches, whether with fictional crime-fighting superheroes or prominent aviation firms, there tends to be a what is perhaps a fair amount?of eye-rolling on the part of watch enthusiasts. In essence, these co-branding exercises tend to be much more about quick marketing, buoyed by lots and lots of legal paperwork. I don't think that the Bulgari Octo Maserati is necessarily an exception to this rule, but there is undoubtedly something to say about the understated way that this old Italian brand continues its partnership?with, well, another old Italian brand C Maserati C to present a?limited edition timepiece in?celebration of their shared anniversaries in 2014. Plus, the use of a manufacture movement?and two old-world finishing techniques on the dial add a lot more substance to the package. 2 OF 8 A benchmark of Bulgari's watchmaking division, the Octo collection is known for its Art?Deco-influenced angular case design, seen here
