Piaget Kanthara Brings $602,500 at Christie’s New York Sale
This stunning Piaget Kanthara brought a multiple of its pre-sale estimate at Christie’s December 14 sale of fine collector timepieces in New York. Estimated at $200,000 to $300,000, lot 47 realized $602,500 when the hammer came down. Though nearly 400 lots followed, none exceeded the Piaget’s sale price, making it the top piece of the evening. Christie’s sale notes indicate that the Kanthara was produced in very small numbers and in different versions: all diamonds, diamonds with rubies, diamonds with sapphires and diamonds with emeralds.Piaget flew a pair of diamond and emerald set Kanthara wristwatches from Geneva to New York for the glamorous 1996 opening of their first North American boutique on Fifth Avenue. The Kanthara originally was manufactured with diamonds totaling more than 100 carats.See complete sale results at the official Christie’s Web site.
Thoughts On The Confrerie Horlogere La Clef du Temps Tourbillon Watch
I have been pondering how I should think about this watch for a while. I want to like it, and a big part of me does. Another part of me questions the wisdom of the watch. Is it wearable? Does it makes sense? Would you be considered akin to an alien from outer space for wearing one? The watch is a new piece from the Confrerie Horlogere, a watch making arm of the popular watch movement maker BNB Concept (that is about the declare bankruptcy). The model is the La Clef du Temps Tourbillon, and there will only be 24 of them ever made. Apparently one for each timezone. One of these watches was auctioned off in the Only Watch 2009 watch auction in September for well over $200,000 which was close to its retail price. As a limited edition of just 24 pieces, the watch can justify itself. Still, I feel the need to evaluate it as though they were going to me 24,000 of them. One this that strikes me as beingwell curious to say that least, is that this isn't the only watch that has this movement. ROO 25 Anniversary RG Tourbillon
SIHH for me SIHH was as I predicted disappointing. The only watch I'd love to get is the ROO 25th anniversary Tourbillon in rose gold, which sadly is considerably beyond what I'd be comfortable to spend on a watch, at this time at least. I did ask how much it was but have forgotten. A pity, as I think it's one of the most beautiful designs I've ever seen -I think the case design and pusher design is awesome. I asked if this case style might be adopted for other less rarefied 44s in the future, but it seems, sadly, the answer is no. What I haven't put over in these pics is the depth of the piece, it is so utterly 3D. Beautiful!
