Niall One Mechanical Watches Claim To Be Made With Over 90% American Parts
Niall is a new watch company based out of Kansas City, Missouri, here in the USA, and is part of an emerging trend of micro timepiece makers in the US that seem to be popping up all over the place. I have a feeling that much of this is an extension of the "Shinola-effect," a term I just came up with to describe how entrepreneurial types in America are seeking to get a portion of the luxury watch market by leveraging a "home grown" angle to watch making. The fallacy, of course, is that the majority of these watch companies in the US don't actually produce anything in the US. There are exceptions of course, and from what I can see, a lot of efforts are being made so that more and more watch parts can be sourced from American companies. A point of distinction that Niall is trying to make is just how much of each of their Niall One model watches come from American suppliers. The link above goes to a map on the Niall website that claims to pinpoint the places where the various components for

Annual calendar enters October...
Yesterday was then end of my first 30-day month with the Nautilus Annual Calendar. I was both curious to see the gears grind away and also wondered if an old dog (me) could learn a new trick - make a time-lapse video of the event. I'm fascinated with time-lapse but don't have the right software tools so I resorted to the manual crowbar method...At 11:40 I found that the watch had already staged Sep 31st ;) in prep for the big 10/1. It took until 1 am for the date wheel to get perfectly aligned and I had lost patience at 12:45. Day of week clicked right in at 11:59. OK, well, whatever...The video is small and a bit jerky from embedding here and is better viewed on Youtube and even better yet on my machine. It's a bit crude but the soundtrack softens the blow (Lucky Thompson, anyone?).If I ever do this again (not likely) I'm gonna reset the watch and do it during the day!
