SIHH 2011 Recap: Safe Bet For the Watch World
SIHH 2011 is an event I almost did not attend but I am glad that I did. The story of my journey to this year's invite-only International Salon of Haute Horology is however, another story. The expansive halls of world's other' most important watch show are a temple of luxury and industry chimes you learn a lot by being there and listening, as well as seeing. Together, almost 20 brands that represent all of the Richemont and a few other accompanying high-end watch makers get together to show off their new products for 2011. For those attending, it is an annual pilgrimage, and for those who cannot enter, it is an enviable place to be invited.I'd like to first make a personal statement about being at the event I love it. While at home in California I write about watches from the seclusion of my home. I don't have an industry to surround myself with like those who live in Europe. Being at SIHH allows me to live my work. In addition to being in the element that I write about and see
I need some 1968 speedmaster info please...
Hey all, I have a 68 speedmaster that was reworked last year, when fully wound what amount of power reserve would I expect and what time differences have you seen on your watches, say I set time to 18:00:00 and within 1-2 days with regular winding and not running the stopwatch, should I see a gain or loss of time within 1-2 min. or more? thanks for any input........ also when you pull the crown out to set time does the second hand for the watch stop [ mine keeps ticking] -Andy
Finally a decision!
I have been agonising over which Patek to go for and have finally reached a decision! Wow, it's been tough!I started off wanting a 5726. Then I decided that the 5764 was more realistically within budget. Then I fell completely for the 5990 which blew my mind, and I decided I'd find the money! But then someone mentioned the 5980, and that's even better!!But...I want my first Patek to be a keeper which means (a) getting one I can afford to keep if things get a little tough, and (b) getting one that suits my small wrists. So, the 5990 and 5980 are out as they are both probably a touch oversized for my wrists. Some will disagree, and of course I could get away with it (I have an AP Diver!) but my personally view is that whilst tool watches can be oversized, I think sports watches should match wrist and general physique size.I love the 5726 and the idea of the annual calendar is appealing. But...the 5712 has suddenly come from nowhere to win the race!! I'm not sure whether it will be the Ste
INCOMING: 5712/1A + Thoughts on 5712 vs 5711
After a lot of effort and some luck, I received my new 5712/1A from my AD today!!!I had been going back and forth between getting a 5711 or a 5712 (both in steel/blue dial), but went for the 5712 after agonizing over this decision for a long time.By way of background, I have a good friend who already has a 5711 in steel and I would constantly bother him to try it on, inspect it, or just stare at him wearing it to get a feel for it in every light condition. In the end, my thoughts were that it is a gorgeous watch and sublime, but in indoor lighting it takes on a vintage look that I wasn't crazy about. In short, it needed the dial to be alive reflecting light to be in its full glory. Today, after wearing my 5712 for several hours and looking at in in a number of lighting conditions, a few things stuck out to me that I wasn't expecting. First, I actually PREFER the 5712 dial in outdoor lighting because although there is less open space on the dial for the light to play versus the 5711, th
