German Watchmaking Struts its Stuff at WatchTime New York 2015
Despite a predominance of very fine Swiss watch brands (along with one notable brand each from Japan and the USA) at last weekend’s WatchTime New York event, Germany, especially the German watchmaking town of Glashtte, was well-represented also, winning over guests with some very distinctive timepieces. Here is a sampling. The most prestigious Glashtte brand, A. Lange & S?hne, was a must-visit for many WTNY guests. In addition to the new gold-cased, black-dialed version of its A. Lange & S?hne Datograph Up/Down with a flyback chronograph and large Outsize date indication the brand also had its new Zeitwerk Striking Time model on display as well as the all-new, F.A. Lange 200th Anniversary Saxonia model with proprietary honey gold case. Lange also wowed visitors with a live watchmaker plying his trade at a workbench in its booth.A. HODINKEE Powerball Special: What Watches We'll Buy When We Win Tonight's $1.5 Billion Jackpot
Here at HODINKEE HQ, we have been talking about the Powerball A LOT lately. We all (shamelessly) have bought tickets and are waiting with bated breath until the numbers are drawn tonight. Naturally, we all have talked about what we would do if we won and the obvious question has been, "What watch would you buy?" So here you have it, our tops picks of what watch (or watches) we would buy with the $1.5 billion winnings. Nicholas Manousos C George Daniels' Space Traveller 1 OF 6 If I win Powerball tonight and could splurge on any watch imaginable, I would attempt to purchase George Daniels' Space Traveller watch. I say attempt, because the Space Traveller is a one-of-a-kind watch that was last sold at auction on November 6, 2012 for 1,329,250 GBP. I would have to somehow find the current owner, and convince them to part ways with their unique piece of horological history. Finished in 1982, the Space Traveller is George Daniels' masterpiece. It ep
Introducing The Nomos True Blue Zurich Weltzeit, A Favorite Receives A New Dial, And In-House Escape
You would be hard-pressed to find a more somber blue on the color palette, but that’s just how we like our Bauhaus – subdued and straightforward. The new True Blue Zurich Weltzeit is NOMOS’ chic take on its exquisite GMT that made headlines a few years back (check out this old-skool Week on the Wrist) and a recent appearance at HODINKEE’S event to welcome NOMOS to the States earlier this summer. Let’s dive right in.It’s unlikely for a HODINKEE reader to be unfamiliar with NOMOS, but just in case you haven’t had the privilege of being introduced to the younger German – here’s a quick preface. NOMOS Glashütte was born in '91 in the little town of Glashütte, Germany. If that name sounds familiar, that's because it’s also the birthplace of A. Lange & Söhne, the house that pioneered the three-quarter plate. Nivarox was patented here, and clearly, pedigree is contagious in this environment. 2 OF 3
