Richard Mille’s New RM 011 Brings Another F1 Material to Watchmaking
Richard Mille has long been at the forefront of introducing new materials into watchmaking, particularly those used in the world of Formula One auto racing. At this year’s SIHH, the brand introduced yet another first in that area: the new RM 011 Flyback Chronograph, the first watch with a case made of brown silicon nitride. The new RM 011 is equipped with Richard Mille’s automatic caliber RMAC1, now updated to include a flyback chronograph mechanism. In addition to a tourbillon and an annual calendar function, the movement also includes a “variable geometry rotor,” a device exclusive to Richard Mille, which optimizes the winding of the barrel by adapting it to the user's activities i.e., different settings based on one’s level of physical activity that help to avoid overwinding the mainspring. The watch gets its distinctive, metallic brown color from the innovative new case material, brown silicon nitride, which is exceptionally hard (1,500 Vickers) and di
Magrette Moana Pacific Diver Watch
Heads up Magrette fans, your favorite New Zealand watch maker is about to release a new limited edition model - their first diving watch. Being an enthusiastic lover of diving watches, I am thrilled. Best part is that in addition to the watch being a new model, the case and dial are much upgraded, taking the brand to yet another high level. The watch is the Magrette Moana Pacific Diver, the a new diving watch version of the Moana Pacific watch that I reviewed here. I continue talking about Magrette watches because I keep hearing from my reader that you love them - good thing I share the same sentiment. One thing that became apparent to me as I studied this watch is that Magrette is finally getting a distinct character - which is a good thing. Branding is a complex endeavor (for new and old brands alike). In addition to getting a signature look, Magrette is getting real character. This is a type of personality that we mentally attribute to certain items and products. What personality do
The Watches Worn By NASA Astronaut Scott Kelly, Holder Of New U.S. Spaceflight Endurance Record
(Above, astronaut Kelly flashes a victory sign after landing, wearing a Speedmaster Professional; photo via AP Images.)American astronaut Scott Kelly recently returned to Earth after a record-breaking 342 days in space – a record for any American astronaut (though not the absolute record; currently that's held by cosmonaut Valeri Polyakov, who was aloft on Mir in 1995 for a staggering 437 days). The purpose of the experiment was to further study the long-term effects of weightlessness on the human body – critical information for any contemplated human-crewed mission to Mars, for instance. Kelly's twin brother provided a comparison benchmark, and interestingly enough, Mark Kelly is also an astronaut (making them the only siblings ever to have both been space travelers). The Kelly brothers aren't just astronauts; it looks like they're both into watches – let's take a look at what Scott's been seen wearing, both in space and on Earth. 1 OF
Traded my omega po for a skyland avenger today... Couldn't be happier!
I had the opportunity to trade my Omega PO for a near mint Breitling Skyland Avenger 45mm today.... and I'm so glad I did! I purchased my Omega PO 45.5mm Orange bezel when the watch was first released about 10 years ago. It was just one of those watches that spoke to me when I tried it on. But as time went on I wore it less. Maybe it was because the orange bezel didn't really fit my work attire. So I came across a local dealer selling a pre-owned Avenger and worked out a straight across trade. I think I the better end of the deal for sure. My PO retailed for $3300 when I purchased it and the Avenger was $5000. Today the PO sells online around $2000 and the Avenger sells for $2700. My first Breitling! Hopefully not my last!
