Historical Perspectives: American Pocket Watches: A Primer For The Wristwatch Collector
John Cote is a professional photographer and watch collector living in Indianapolis, Indiana. HODINKEE welcomes his insights on the world of American pocket watches. – NM What should a wristwatch nerd know about American pocket watches and the industry that made them? In my opinion, from the late 1850s until just after WWII, the American watch industry produced more and probably better portable timekeeping machines than the rest of the world combined.I said portable timekeeping machines instead of watches, because during the same time the Swiss produced a lot of fabulous and technically amazing watches. The American watch industry primarily produced time-only watches while the Swiss made these, and also a lot of exquisitely complicated watches. What drove the American watch industry was the idea of producing tool watches for the masses. The founders of the industry were starting from scratch and they wanted to produce quality timepieces that the common man could afford. Ea
A Week On The Wrist: The Slim D'Hermes (And Some Thoughts On What Makes Or Breaks A Dial)
Think about Hermès and suddenly your mind envisions magnificent French leather goods. To be frank, at that time they lacked serious cred for watch enthusiasts, as they relied on fairly standard quartz or automatic movements. Things started to change with the collaboration with the Manufacture Vaucher Fleurier 10 years ago, but the Slim might well be the turning point for Hermès watches, and I had the Slim for a Week On The Wrist to find out the answer. 1 OF 14 In 2006, Hermès addressed its lack of in-house-movement manufacturing by taking a 25% owne
Watch Test PAM312
Very fortunate today to have an opportunity to tour a Rolex repair facility. Cool stuff to see. They had this instrument that measures acoustic vibrations. You place your watch on it and it show a digital and graphical output on how your watch is performing. Many of the folks I was with tested their Rolex Subs. I was off target because I wore my Panerai 312 today. I asked if he would test mine and he did. Really nice. It was perfect!! Started out +/- 1 sec but balanced out with 0 variation. Definitely a fun morning. Just thought I would share this experience.
