IWC Portuguese Yacht Club Chronograph Ocean Racer
Boat races and watches C a weird and yet?seemingly ever-green combination. A few years ago, IWC joined the craze and has?chosen to sponsor the Volvo Ocean Race, a remarkably challenging, round-the-world race that starts this October in Alicante, Spain, and terminates in Gothenburg, Sweden, in June 2015. With regards to?IWC's role more specifically, the brand is?the event's Official Timekeeper, partner of?the Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing team, and sponsor of the 24-hour speed record. And while that does seem like a total overkill for someone not that?into the world of competitive sailing, this web of collaborations?does result in a surprisingly?restrained, yet sporty-looking chronograph that arguably makes a lot more sense than the sponsorship-frenzy behind it. The watch dedicated to?the event is the?IWC Portuguese Yacht Club Chronograph Ocean Racer, a limited edition of just 1,000 pieces. It was almost three years ago that we discussed its predecessor (article here),?the 2011-2012 limited ed
Hands-on with the Kent Wang Art Deco
Before getting into Kent Wang's new Art Deco watch, one first needs to know two thingsobviously, who and what is Kent Wang, and what is the Art Deco period. Kent Wang is a brand named after its founder. KW got its start in 2007 when Mr. Wang, frustrated by the lack of well-priced pocket squares, decided to take matters into his owns handsor pockets as it were. From there, a brand of refined and classic men's clothing and accessories emerged. From ties to bespoke suits to a couple of watches, Kent Wang is nice alternative to mainstream stores for higher-end dress wear needs.Art Deco is a visual style that followed WWI and lasted through the 40's (roughly until WWII). It's a bold style that combined elements from the Craft period and Machine age. Ranging through all media from objects to graphics, and notably to architecture, Art Deco is defined by bold geometry with an eye for symmetry and flow, a use of strong colors and highly detailed decoration. There are many existing examples of
Royal Oak resiliency vs other sports watches?
So this is not something that is an immediate issue for me but I do curate a list of watches that I intend to buy and re-order them as my tastes change, while trying to keep a list that in the end will give me a little of everything. As my tastes have changed over the past few years I have gotten more and more into finishing and movements leading the likes of JLC, ALS and Patek onto my list. However I do want to have at least one very basic sports watch that I can be less concerned about bumping or scratching, something that I could wear in the rain or even swim with, without worry (things I would never attempt with a complicated or ultra thin dress watch). I know that the Royal Oak isn't a super dive watch like a Sea-Dweller or Submariner, but is it a watch that could fulfill what I am looking for? I particularly like the plain steel and blue 15300 and find it to be much more attractive than a Nautilus or Submariner but if its not really suited for the role I would have in mind, I would
