A Week On The Wrist: The Hamilton Pan-Europ Auto
Hamilton introduced the modern incarnation of its famous Pan-Europ watch at the 2011 Baselworld fair. It was a design based on an original, which debuted in 1971, and it’s done well enough to merit the release of a less-complicated variant, which we saw at last year's Basel. It’s still got the retro good looks and practical price point, but does it capture the charm of the original from the '70s? We spent a week with the Pan-Europ Auto to find out. Introduction The Pan-Europ label dates back to the early '60s, first appearing on Hamilton dress watches and eventually sports watches (including a ladies' diver) on up to and through the mid '70s. Of course, Hamilton itself dates all the back to the late 19th century, and has a rich heritage of creating tool watches throughout the 20th. The Pan-Europ 703 of 1971 carries with it the distinction of housing the famous caliber 11, among the first automatic chronograph movements brought to market tha
Hands-On: The MB&F Legacy Machine Perpetual Calendar, And Why It Matters To Anyone Interested In Watches
The Legacy Machine Perpetual Calendar was the very first true high complication from MB&F, which seems very difficult to believe at first, because the impression one has of the company, and its watches, is exactly the one of exclusivity and ingenuity that you ordinarily associate with the traditional high complications. The perpetual calendar in the Legacy Machine Perpetual is like every other perpetual calendar ever made in that it allows the watch to correctly show the date, whether or not the month in question has 31, 30, 29, or 28 days in it. How it does what it does isn’t arbitrary, either – it’s an essential part of the fantastic aesthetics of the watch. To understand how the Legacy Machine Perpetual can look the way it does, you need to understand what a perpetual calendar is, how it works, and how the Legacy Machine takes the basic principles of a traditional perpetual calendar and modifies them in order to allow it to look like no other perpetual calendar
Popped into Geneva Salon for 5320 and 5131P
I wanted to have a quick look at some strap options for the 5320 and I am glad I saw the watch again. Think it's absolutely gorgeous. I think you will be intrigued by the strap choice which I will post in September I went into the salon with every intention to hate the bracelet on the 5131P. In fact I was convinced that it needed to go on a strap!! Gotta admit I was wrong. The watch us really gorgeous and the weight is significant. It feels even heavier than my 5711P. Shouldn't all high end sport watches be like this?
I am not a huge VC fan, but one thing I do like with their new overseas collection is that you can go between bracelet, rubber or leather strap without problem. It gets really tiring when you put 20-30K in a sports watch and the manufacturer does everything in his power to prohibit you changing anything, if you get a Nautilus on bracelet it is impossible to put a strap, and vice versa, , even Rolex does it, when I got my Daytona RG on strap I asked and was told that it was impossible to put a bracelet on it because of the different lug width, they are becoming very boring with this, I would love when I get my 5712 to be able to go from bracelet to rubber, even to leather if I want to, how long will brands play this little game of limiting the possibilities of making the watch like you want and when you want…Here's a pic of the VC where you have the 3 possibilitiesVacheon-Constantin-4500V-110A-B128_STRAPS.jpg
