Seiko Wins Sports Watch of the Year at the Grand Prix dHorlogerie de Genve
Seiko’s Spring Drive Spacewalk Commemorative Edition was named the Sports Watch of the Year at the 2010 Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genve. This accolade is the most prestigious yet awarded to Seiko's unique Spring Drive technology. The Spacewalk was taken into space by Richard Garriott and worn during his stay onboard the International Space Station in 2008. In accepting the award on behalf of the President & CEO of Seiko Watch Corporation, Mr. Shinji Hattori, Shu Yoshino, General Manager of Public Relations & Advertising, described the watch: This is the only watch in the world designed from scratch to be worn during a spacewalk. It is a watch that brings mankind a step closer to the stars as its hands glide across the dial, plotting time with no tick', in perfect harmony with the eternal motion of the planets. I thank you sincerely for this award which will be the pride of the entire Seiko family. Along with the winners in all the other categories, the Seiko Spri
My First Grail Watch: Kari Voutilainen
Welcome back to an original watches-dealer feature, "My First Grail Watch." In this series, we ask prominent people in the watch industry about the first timepiece that they lusted after. Today, we're speaking with Kari Voutilainen, a watchmaker who owns his exclusive brand, Kari Voutilainen.watches-dealer (ABTW): Who are you, and what is your relationship to the watch industry?Kari Voutilainen: I am first and foremost a watchmaker. I also have a watch company in which we are making our own in-house movements, as well as dials and hands. My production is extremely exclusive and I will keep it this way. My relation is good with watch industry - actually we are part of it - but we are very independent. This is because we don't have suppliers - we do everything by ourselves.ABTW: When did your fascination with watches start?Kari Voutilainen: When I was a child, we had a family friend who had a watch shop, and was also a watchmaker.ABTW: A great way to be introduced to a wide variety of wa
Inside The Manufacture: Photo Report: Inside The IWC Museum In Schaffhausen
When we were over in Schaffhausen filming the currently on-going series "A Man's Guide To Buying A Watch" with IWC, they were gracious enough to let us into their absolutely awesome museum. Inside, we found some of the earliest IWC watches on record, and all of the classics pieces from the brand's superb history, including many that act as the inspiration for today's collection - think original Portuguese pieces from 1939, 1950s MKXI pilot's watches, late 60s Aquatimers, and the original Genta-designed Ingenieur SL. Take a look below and revel in the vintage IWC awesomeness, and if you happen to make it to Schaffhausen, we HIGHLY recommend you pay a visit. And, just so you know, Schaffhausen is a quick (and beautiful) train ride from Zurich. 2 OF 37 3 OF 37 4 OF 37
got crown?
so, i might have been a little bored tonight..I've always wondered why watch makers with such precision haven't cared to align the crown perfectly with the case. It honestly doesn't bother me, but noticing that my crown lines up with the case is a major bonus Please post pics, How does your crown line up? Cheers all
5980/1A (white) or 5960/1A
Just received a call from my AD.. Out of surprise while I am STILL waiting for my 5235G (I missed the opportunity recently due to my traveling schudule), I am being offered both double sealed 5980/1A (white) and the 5960/1A both at the same price. I owned a 5980/1A briefly (for only a week) before, sold it to a good friend who love the watch more than I do during that time and now I kinda regret cos I like even more now than ever and getting a brand new double sealed is not easy. I think out of all the SS 5980, the white dial is least popular.. I only seen them in the wild couple of times while the black and blue are common (I love the blue btw) The 5960/1A is really hot right now and it is one of the latest PP, hence will be a great addition maybe might end up too popular? No? PS. I am buying the watch for my own use. Daily beater. Love to hear your thoughts.Thank you in advance for your kind feedbacks! .. Jane
