10 Things To Know About How Rolex Makes Watches
Rolex really isn't like any other watch brand. In fact, the privately held, independently run entity isn't like most other companies. I can say this now with a lot more clarity than most people because I was there. Rolex rarely allows anyone into its hallowed halls, but I was invited to visit their four manufacture locations in Switzerland and experience first-hand how Rolex makes their famous watches.Rolex is a universe of its own: respected; admired; valued; and known across the globe. Sometimes I sit back and think about all that Rolex is and does and find it hard to believe that at the end of the day, they just make watches. Rolex does just make watches and their timepieces have taken on a role beyond that of mere timekeeper. Having said that, the reason a "Rolex is a Rolex" is because they are good watches and tell pretty good time. It's taken me over a decade to fully appreciate the brand, and it will probably take longer before I learn everything I'd like to know about them. The
The Value Proposition: A Seventy-Five Dollar Watch That Looks Like A Million Bucks
I sometimes wonder, when we post pictures and articles of watches like this, or this, or even this, whether we are not inadvertently creating the impression that we spend most of our time at Chateau Hodinkee alternating between sippin’ Darjeeling on the veranda with our pinkies out, and upbraiding Manservant Jeeves for being slow with the Pol Roger and caviar at teatime. When you’re heavy into mechanical watches there’s a sort of creeping tendency, over the years, to make the unspoken assumption that all other things being equal, you get what you pay for – which is to say, if it’s not expensive it ain’t much. The fact is, though, that really good design, quality in execution, and even real horological charm, to say nothing of a healthy helping of history, can be had for less than the cost of what my long-suffering spouse and I spend on dry cleaning every week. Behold the worst-kept secret in watchdom: the Seiko 5. 1 OF 6 Long revered by
This is a cool watch...
...never owned one before, and being a Panerai guy, this watch is perfect. Love the 45mm size on the rubber strap and love the dial. I'm very impressed for sure.
Which GMT + Chrono combo to buy?
Hi guys,Here is what I have so far:1) Sub: 116610LV - aka Hulk2) Datejust 41: TT Champagne dial with diamond markersWhich GMT + Chrono combo should I buy next:1) Panerai PAM00531 (or other Panerai GMT of your choice) + Rolex 116500LN Daytona2) Rolex 116710BLNR GMT-Master II + Omega Speedmaster '57 (or other Omega Speedmaster of your choice)3) ALL Rolex: Rolex 116710BLNR GMT-Master II + Rolex 116500LN DaytonaI want to get some idea as to having a more diverse collection (having a bit of Panerai or Omega) or do all rolex.(Pictures are incl. for your reference.)Thanks for your opinion.
Opinions on this trade?
Hi All,I got a black LN and its a great watch and currently its my only Rolex but ultimately I have had this watch a couple of times now and it's getting pretty boring.I am contemplating trading it for a 16613 Blue 2005 with box and papers (my LN is just the watch itself)Do you think I should do it? The 16613 is one of the few watches I have never had before. I do prefer the 6 digit bluesy but don't currently have the funds for it. I am 36 so have no qualms about wearing 2 tone.I have worn plenty of 5 digit references before in the past so it won't be a shock really to back to a 5 digit reference.Opinions welcome. I think with XMAS coming up - just got the Christmas itch to buy something but I do wonder with the market the way it is, sticking with SS is the way forward. Thanks All.
