Baselworld 2013: NOMOS Ahoi
There's just something appealing about the stark aesthetic espoused by the Bauhaus design ethos, and NOMOS is just one of those brands that embodies it well, to my way of thinking. ?They've introduced several new models this year at Basel (see our writeup here on the new NOMOS 38 series), and I came across another one that surprised me a bit.Of course, being surprised by model introductions in Basel is par-for-the-course, at least some of the time. ?What surprised me the most about this new Ahoi model is that it's truly a dive watch (if in no other terms than it's 200 meter water resistance rating), while still hewing to that simple design that work so well in the office or with a suit.If you're familiar with the Tangomat lineup (our hands-on review is here), the new Ahoi will seem instantly familiar. The most noticeable change would be the inclusion of colors on the otherwise monochrome scheme, with blue luminous hands and a bright red seconds hand. ?You'll find additional lume in the
JeanRichard Diverscope JR1000 Diving Watch
Now this is a nice diving watch. I find it refreshing to see a simple and straight forward design execution such as this. What else would you expect from JeanRichard, Girard Perregaux's baby brand? The Diverscope JR1000 watch has the sensibility of somewhere between a Rolex Submariner and a Blancpain Fifty Fathoms. The design is not quite as refined as those two, but the look is really fantastic and the straight-forwardness of the design is appealing and welcome. The Diverscope is watch from the 1960's and here is a modern rendition of the look. Me liking it, as well as the other aforementioned diving watches probably means I like retro design better than moderns design! But hey, a lot of modern diver's watches are way to cluttered and "noisy." Too much going on is distracting and will prevent a watch from being a favored daily wear. There is a lot to like about this watch. I'll start with the movement which is an in-house made (good, bur surprising) JeanRichard JR1000 automatic mechani
Phillips auctions
So I'm looking at the final bid prices on some of these watches on the Phillips Auction site from November and they are incredible. Some pieces I get, but others like a 1973 SS DateJust went for $47,000!? Seriously? I'd say $3,500 is the going rate. Also a PVD coated 2008 Milgauss for $87,500! Wow! Am I missing something. I think some of these bidders got caught up in the moment!
Where will the crazy prices of the old Pepsi go now?
I expect a significant price dip in the preowned 5 digit Pepsi in light of the new release. What do you guys think?
