My First Grail Watch: Roland G. Murphy Of RGM
Welcome back to an original watches-dealer feature, "My First Grail Watch". In this series, we ask prominent people in the watch industry about the first timepiece that they lusted after.watches-dealer (ABTW): Who are you and what is your relationship to the watch industry?Roland G. Murphy (RGM): I am the man and watchmaker behind RGM Watch.ABTW: What was your first grail watch?RGM: It was a Patek 3970 back in the 1980s. I did get one used that needed work, I repaired it and sold it back in the early 90's.ABTW: Was there ever a time in your life when you could afford it?RGM: Yea, in the early 1990s.ABTW: What did you like so much about the watch?RGM: The complications and the classic look.ABTW: Did you ever get it?RGM: For a while, and then sold it.Editor's Note: Roland also referenced their older RGM 103R model, which he believes took the 3970 design and made it even grander.[Update: July 8, 2014 - While we value the quality of their product, in light of recent events, watches-dealer
Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra Co-Axial GMT Chronograph Watch
Omega ups the ante with this new Seamater Aqua Terra GMT Chronograph watch. The timepiece is available in either steel or 18k red gold, and on both versions the hands and hour markers on the dial are in 18k gold. Sounds like Rolex territory to me. Not sure if any previous Seamaster Aqua Terra watches had gold (white) in the dials of even steel watches. The vertical line pattern of the dial is meant to look like the deck of a boat (the "Teak Concept"), which explains part of the ritzy character of the watch. The dial will have highly polished features, and you can tell it is nice and deep to look into. There is of course a metal (steel or gold) bracelet available in addition to the alligator strap. The watch will be a good size at 44mm wide. Things were getting kinda crazy with the 46mm plus sizes that Omega started to dabble with a little while ago.The watch has a rotating GMT style bezel and the iconic red arrow GMT hand. I like the length of the GMT hand on a watch like the Rolex Exp
Introducing: The Bulova CURV Chronographs, With High Frequency Shaped Quartz Movements
Since 2007, Bulova has been owned by the Citizen Watch Co. of Japan, but it was for many decades before that an upstanding member of the American horological community, with many innovations to its credit C including, of course, the Accutron. The tuning-fork-based Accutron is largely a thing of the past, but Bulova still innovates in timekeeping technology, with its high-frequency, high-accuracy quartz calibers C and now, with its CURV family of chronographs, it presents the first curved-movement quartz chronographs ever made. 1 OF 8 2 OF 8 The CURV chronographs are, as they say, just what it says on the tin: shaped quartz chronograph watches, which allows the watch to sit very comfortably on the wrist. The movement is a variation on the Precisionist calibers that Bulova first introduced in 2010. These movements have a 262 kilohertz frequency, as opposed to about 32 kilohertz for a conventional quartz oscillator. The upshot is better accuracy C about +/- 10 seconds
