In-Depth: A Visit To Glashtte Originals Alfred Helwig Watchmaking School
Glashütte has a very strong tradition of horological education, dating back to the 19th century. In 1878, the German School of Watchmaking Glashütte was founded in the center of the German mountain town. Today, the school is run by Glashütte Original and named after its famous student and instructor, Alfred Helwig. While you may not know of Alfred Helwig, you most likely know of his famous invention, the flying tourbillon. HODINKEE recently visited the school and met instructor Thomas Goldbeck for a tour. What I saw was incredible, and left me feeling great about the future of watchmaking in Glashütte. 1 OF 16 Thomas Goldbeck, Instructor I should preface this by stating that I studied watchmaking at the Nicolas G. Hayek school in Miami, Florida. Like the Alfred Helwig School, the Nicolas G. Hayek School is affiliated with the Swatch Group, and offers WOSTEP certification. The European watchmaking industry is larger than the American industry, and
What is this Breitling?
Hi All,I recently purchased this nice Breitling manual wind single pusher chronograph. I've been trawling forums to try and find a similar model but with no luck. The case size is 41mm.It looks like an early 40's model, maybe a precursor to the Chronomat? The dial has been restored from what I can see.Kind regards,Paul
Speedmaster Pro Vs Auto
Ive been looking for a Speedmaster for a little while now and have seen a lot of Auto's for sale at much lower prices than the Pro's. Why do the Pro's command a premium?
List all the changes/updates after BaselWorld
I thought it be easier to put all the changes/updates and new launches in one thread.I see that many more options are available on other line of watches. Besides the big annoucements, they are some subtle changes. Like no more Arabic or Roman Numerals on SkyD. The rolex crown is printed between Swiss and Made on the New Dials! Here is one for Starter DJ41 SS/RG TT has Slate Dial now!4CB1A0C5-FF43-4FFB-A57A-44599DDC862F.jpeg
No more waiting... Platinum, Ceramic GMTs (pics)
With the teaser promising the donning of the jubilee on a sports model, presumably a new GMT, the speculation and wishful thinking for a platinum GMT model has all but dwindled to a whisper approaching the final day before the big reveals. So, I thought I would add a small contribution, as my own teaser, for what is unlikely to come to pass as another Basel comes and goes. New Coke, or Blueberry, or Pepsi, or LN offered on jubilee should be enough to hold us over for the next 11 months --or two weeks-- before the Basel 2019 predictions start If the general consensus is that the WG sports models didn't sell too well, what would be the rational that a higher priced similarly toned model would do any better? I assume the Daytona may be an anomaly, or off limits to discuss, since I can't recall any discussions on how good or bad sales may be for the PM models.
