Easy Looking At The Easy Diver, Dive Watch Series By Roger Dubuis
On a few instances I have dedicated discussion to the world of luxury diving watches. To some, it seems a contradiction, why imbue a tool meant to be exposed to harsh elements with a luxury facade? To others, it seems like the perfect combination of things they love. I fall into this latter category. The seminal luxury diving watch was the Rolex Submariner. Since them, many have come in to market and have succeeded Rolex at it's own game in many areas.Today the object of my affection are the mostly beautiful watches in the Roger Dubuis Easy Diver line. The name is probably taken from "Easy Rider," and evokes a spirit of confident yet calm entrance into the elements. The watch doesn't "prepare" for diving, it simply does without notice while minding itself and focusing on other matters such as remaining shiny and full of class.The shape of the Easy Diver case is very unique in my opinion. Pairs Well With: Helson Gauge
The Helson Gauge is a beautiful watch with a distinct look and serious dive capabilities, but as Helson says on their website, it may not be "everybody's cup of tea". ?Modeled after a vintage depth gauge, the Gauge itself is a robust 47 mm in diameter and 22 mm tall, making it one of the larger watches on the market.? But all this size is for a good reason, as it adds to the desired aesthetic of a vintage dive instrument.? The case of the Gauge is titanium with a bronze bezel, and the watch features a vintage domed sapphire crystal.? Inside the case is a 25 Jewel ETA 2824-2 automatic movement.? The watch also features an astounding 3500 M water resistance.? We're huge fans of Helson here at worn&wound and the Gauge is no exception.? Given its size, we thought it may make for an interesting and fun centerpiece for a Pairs Well With.? Patek 5140 - a bargain or pitfall
Whilst looking for a 3970 i came across a 5140 being offered by quite a reputable grey market dealer based.The watch is the 5140G and is five years old - whilst i have not viewed it in person the dealer tells me that the watch is in excellent condition and the photographs would seem to back that up.The watch is priced at $45,000 - which to me seems very reasonable.The catch is that it comes without the original box (the dealer said that they could provide a Patek box) and without original papers. I spoke with the dealer and he wasn't sure if he had the archive papers either.Is there any way to mitigate the potential pitfalls of this purchase (e.g. it could have been stolen, could have been serviced by a none approved Patek specialist, could be faulty etc).Or would you just stay away from it all together?I don't mind passing on it but i find it hard to miss out on what could be a good deal.Any thoughts / input appreciated.
