The Value Proposition: A Seventy-Five Dollar Watch That Looks Like A Million Bucks
I sometimes wonder, when we post pictures and articles of watches like this, or this, or even this, whether we are not inadvertently creating the impression that we spend most of our time at Chateau Hodinkee alternating between sippin’ Darjeeling on the veranda with our pinkies out, and upbraiding Manservant Jeeves for being slow with the Pol Roger and caviar at teatime. When you’re heavy into mechanical watches there’s a sort of creeping tendency, over the years, to make the unspoken assumption that all other things being equal, you get what you pay for – which is to say, if it’s not expensive it ain’t much. The fact is, though, that really good design, quality in execution, and even real horological charm, to say nothing of a healthy helping of history, can be had for less than the cost of what my long-suffering spouse and I spend on dry cleaning every week. Behold the worst-kept secret in watchdom: the Seiko 5. 1 OF 6 Long revered by
Southern California
Heading to SCal for a week. Anything worth visiting watch wise (and not watch wise)? Will be staying in La Jolla and West Hollywood. Thanks.
15703 out, 15710 in.
After a few years of ownership of the 15703, and long deliberation, I made the change. A bit goofy financially, but I'm loving the display back and the (less interesting but arguably cleaner looking) matte dial.
Bracelet Feeling A Bit Sloppy
So I'm driving home from work and I feel my watch sliding around more than usual on my wrist. When I get home and take it off, there is definitely som movement where the little post thing clicks into the grabber thing (sorry not very technical there). I'm 99% sure that this is not in my mind, and that it was not like this when I put it on this morning. Any thoughts or ideas? The watch is only 6 or so months old, I'm not rough on it.
What do you guys think of the Panerai 88
Considering trying my first panerai. There is one in Canada that I like. It is a 2011 panerai 88 gmt. Its from a seller I trust. The watch comes with rubber strap, deployment, papers, and nothing else. No box, accessories, or extra straps, he wants to keep those.. I'm trying to negotiate for $5000 Canadian (about $3850US). Does this sound about right? Thanks guys.Josh
