Talking Watches: With John Mayer
Well, you asked for it. You got it. Today we are proud to launch an entirely new HODINKEE original video series. We're loosely calling it "Talking Watches," and these videos are just that: us, talking watches with our friends, new and old. Basically, we will use these monthly – yes, you'll get a new episode each month from here until eternity – videos to give you insight into the minds of watch collectors you might not come across in your daily life. Guys like John Mayer. In this first video, I sit down with John to talk about how he got into watches, what his first great pieces were, and what's he's been wearing on his latest tour. Since John and I first connected a few years back, I've gotten to know him well via multi-day conversations about double-references, short-lived bezel colors, and what the ideal lume plot should look like. But I kept looking. Decided I really liked a Patek 5396r-012, with the beautiful breguet numbers. Tried it on, liked it (thought I liked it), so I went to work on acquiring it. Found one at a what was a significant discount. Traded out of the bluesy, and added a big chunk of money, and got myself the Patek. Week or so later, don't love the Patek anymore. Still want the damn sky-dweller.Thought I could just get my money out of the Patek like I did the Bluesy. Nope. Doesn't work that way. A 20% loss in ONE MONTH. So I keep it, thinking. Thinking. Finally, three months later (as in, this week), I give up waiting and pull the
