Speedmaster Modification
I have always been a fan of the Omega Speedmaster - in fact, my first real watch was a 3570.50, which i purchased after much saving and much research several years back. However, over the years, I've grown more fond of the look of vintage speedmasters, with applied omega logos and more slender baton markers. So, i ended up modifying my speedmaster, at least for the time being, so that it looks similar to a vintage model, but has the personal attachment (and much lower price tag) of my modern version. First, i replaced the bracelet with a 1171, as I never particularly liked the modern version. Next, I replaced the dial with one from the 3594.50 re-issue (raised logo, no professional, as it fits the 1861 movement and looks like a more vintage iteration). Finally, in order to appreciate the movement, I replaced the solid caseback with a sapphire version, keeping the hesalite crystal in place on the front dial. Discounts to be expected?
The local Omega dealer around here is going out of business. Its a chain of 4-5 stores. They have these huge signs plastered in the paper and on the street, play radio commercials sounding like everything must be sold today at liquidation prices etc.For the past few weeks I have stopped by to look at a Planet Ocean Chrono and they have them marked 20% off and won't move another $1. Some liquidation..... Isn't 20-25% pretty typical for an Omega?When does it become a bargain? I really love that watch but would only buy it if it was a super steal price.

DayDate at the Beach?
Yes, I know it's a Rolex and it can be worn anywhere and I typically keep it on no matter what I'm doing...Now that that's out of the way, I'll ask -Has anyone worn their gold DD or gold anything to the beach? Family vacation coming up and I've grown so used to this DD40 on my wrist I just don't feel like wearing my Sub or anything else.Anyone wear their DD to the beach? The older satin finished DD definitely held the scratches better than these polished cases. I'm obviously worried about scratching it up badly, but at the same time, a gold Sub or GMT would scratch just the same.Thoughts?Anyone have any pics of a DD40 with some war wounds?

The Grand Tour - Hammond's Burnt Rolex
Did anyone catch the latest episode of The Grand Tour? On the first episode of Season 2, Richard Hammond crashed the Rimac Concept One on a hill climb in Switzerland. Right after they pulled him out of the car, it burst into flames. The car continued to burn off and on for five days due to a chain reaction of damaged lithium ion cells. The car has 8k cells!Almost every time I see him on the show or previously on Top Gear, he was wearing a SS Sports Rolex. This was their Christmas episode, so they presented him with his burned up Rolex from the crash. They didn't say whether it came off his wrist as a result of the crash or not, but it survived the fire and apparently still works!Looks like a Sea-Dweller 16600. You can see the lack of cyclops and helium escape valve.If anyone had any doubts as to the durability of a Rolex, this should put them to rest.
