Remembering General Norman Schwarzkopf & His Watches
"I always wore two watches during the [Gulf] war. The one on my left arm was set on Saudi Arabian time and the Seiko on my right arm was set on Eastern Standard Time. That way I could quickly glance at my watches and instantly know the time in both Saudi Arabia and Washington, D.C. Sincerely, H. Norman Schwarzkopf General, U.S. Army, Retired." Words from recently departed General Norman Schwarzkopf in a letter to the Antiquorum auction house in the late 1990s when he donated one his watches for a charity auction. The watch was a Seiko SKX009 diver and was on his wrist for at least the entirety of the early 1990s Gulf War. According to the letter and many images from the time, General Norman Schwarzkopf indeed "double wristed it" with a watch on each wrist. Mark of a true watch guy? At auction, the Seiko which can be purchased new for about $200 today went for $11,000.Four star generals in the US military are quite rare but "Stormin' Norman" was among them. Smiths Everest (Timefactors PRS-25) Review
In order to talk about the Smiths Everest watch, one must introduce three brands, two people and one very significant historical event. The Everest, unlike most homage watches, is an homage in name and form, but to two different brandsas well as to their historical intersection at the highest peak on Earth. You see, in 1953 when Sir Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay made their historical climb to the summit of Everest, they had with them two watches: a Smiths and more famously, a Rolex. At this point in time, Smiths is clearly the more obscure brand. One of the only English watch brands of the 20th century, Smiths designed and manufactured timepieces, including movements, in the UK from around 1945 to some point in the 70's. Since the brand dissolved it is no surprise that Rolex has been able to capitalize on this event, making the fact that a Smith's was on the journey somewhat obscure to the general public. These days, the Smiths name has seen a bit of a resurrection, as it is
5167 Lume
Does anyone know which lume is used on the 5167? I'm guessing c3 because of how strong it glows, but I'm not certain. Thanks
Submariner help please.
Evening all. I am seeing the pictures of the 5 digit subs and getting a bit broody. I have a bit of hesitation as I didn't like the clasp when I had a 2 liner and sold it. My GMT 16710 is amazingly comfy and great clasp and the sub clasp seemed too big. My other wares are PP 5712, Sub C LV and 16710 Pepsi. I bought the black bezel to scratch the itch and have more versatility but it just it's the same. Photo below. Please advise with loads of photos!! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
