Thompson Tells Watch-World War Stories at WatchTime New York Event
Veteran watch journalist Joe Thompson, editor-in-chief of WatchTime, entertained attendees at the WatchTime New York show last weekend with stories about his 38 years covering the watch industry. In a presentation called On My Watch: Four Decades Covering the Watch World, Thompson said that he was fortunate to get to cover three revolutions: the quartz-watch revolution of the 1970s, the fashion-watch revolution that started with the Swatch watch in the 1980s, and, most importantly, the mechanical-watch counter-revolution, or renaissance, in the 1990s.Thompson began his presentation by declaring, The mechanical watch is doomed! After a pause, he went on: If you were a young watch reporter in the late 1970s, you didn't know much, but you did know one thing. You knew that the trusty tick-tock, which had had a good 400-year run, was doomed. You knew that because everybody in the industry told you so. Thompson said that for someone like him, the WTNY show, so full of mechanical watches
Running Time: Olympic Hero Usain Bolt Gets His Own Hublot Watch
Jamaican sprinter Usain “Lightning” Bolt became known as the world’s fastest man back in 2008, when he won a gold medal and set new Olympic records at the summer games in Beijing. Now, as Bolt prepares to defend his title this year in London, he will have his own personalized Hublot watch to record his lap times: the King Power Usain Bolt. The new watch, which was designed in collaboration with the Olympic athlete and contains Hublot’s HUB4100 chronograph movement, incorporates several signature elements that are representative of Bolt. On the dial, a silhouette of Bolt in his recognizable sprint pose is applied in anthracite gray transfer atop a black background in the small seconds subdial at 9 o’clock. In the 12-hour chronograph subdial at 6 o’clock, the numbers and indices are in the green color of the Jamaican flag. The dial also has a 30-minute chronograph counter at 3 o’clock and date window at 4:30. (Click on watch photos for larger imag
Omega Wants You! Pays George Clooney To Look Goofy For The Cause
What times we live in. Who would have ever thought to see a celebrity endorse a watch company's recruiting efforts. Sure we are all used to celebrities modeling watches, even attending watch public relations events. I even wrote about watch companies like Audemars Piguet making watches for US presidents, who then plug the brand (for charity).Well new ground has been broken, and I would pay good money to learn the buttering up process involved in getting George Clooney to adorn a watch maker's monocle (called a loupe) and lab coat for this photo shoot. Good thing Clooney looks perplexed in this shot, because while I am sure he owns a few Omega watches, he has never had any experience making them or working on them. Imagine the cajoling required to get him to wear this outfit. "Great shots of the De Ville Mr. Clooney, now put this on your face like soand wear this coat. Lets try it again. Aren't WE looking technical Mr. Clooney?"The who purpose of this advertisement is to get people exci
Omega service problem
I dropped my seamaster planet ocean off for service on 6/11. I was told it would take about 6 weeks for service. I called yesterday to check on it and am now being told it won't be done until August 20th. I find this unacceptable. Has anyone else experienced this excessive service time? I know when I had my older seamaster serviced it took about 8 weeks but not close to eleven. Why can't they get it right? Every Rolex I've had serviced has been completed early or on time. Omega needs to get their act together. Just venting.
My Olympic viewing attire... OMEGA!
As I sit on the couch like many of you viewing the Olympic games supporting our respected countries athletes, I am also enjoying all the OMEGA banners and logos throughout the venues. Here are my OMEGA timepieces that I am wearing proudly as I watch the games... also wearing my OMEGA red hat the OMEGA sent me.
