F. P. Journe announces the Chronom��tre Bleu. The 39mm case is carved from tantalum, a dark gray metal with blue overtones. Tantalum is rarely used in watchmaking because its density and high melting temperature make it difficult to manipulate. Through the display back, the balance and escapement appear mysteriously detached from the movement, beating with no apparent motive force. Journe has placed the connecting train under the dial, leaving only the center wheel to highlight the isolation of the balance. The manually wound movement oscillates at 21,600v/h. Twin barrels work in parallel to deliver stable power for much of its 56-hour autonomy. While there have been rumors that famed NY-based jeweler and watchmaker Harry Winston was in "sell-mode" for a while, we don't think anyone expected this.? In news coming from both side of the equation today, 100% of the Harry Winston company has been acquired by none other than the owner of Omega, Breguet, Hamilton, and like a zillion other watch brands, the Swatch Group.This marks a decided change for Winston, who was for a long time completely independent and privately held, and most recently, publicly traded but essentially independent.? To be fully acquired by a large conglomerate will mean a lot of changes to Winston, and we'll be anxious to see how this plays out.Here are some things to consider in this deal, from our perspective:- Harry Winston is considered the only true "high-luxury" brand remaining in America.? Just saw a RG Schumi at my AD. Retail is HK$614k (~US$79k). Given I recently bought a 44mm RG novelty from them about a month ago they offered me a 18% discount on the Schumi. I think I can get them down to 20% which will be ~HK$490k (~US$63k).Assuming I can sell the 44mm RG novelty for HK$290k (~US$37k), sell my panda ROO on bracelet for ~HK$100k (~US$13k), I would need to put in another HK$100k (~US$13k) to make the schumi purchase.Would you guys do this if you were me?
