Historical Perspectives: The True And Sad Story Of J.B. Champion, Jr., The Man Behind The Most Expensive Watch Without Complications Ever Sold At Auction
On November 12, 2012, the watch collecting community watched in wonder as two of the world's most important Patek Philippe wristwatches went under the hammer at Christie's Geneva: a reference 2499 perpetual calendar chronograph in platinum?offered for sale by Eric Clapton (one of two white metal 2499s ever made, with the other belonging to Patek Philippe)?and a reference 2458 that was made especially for Joe Ben Champion, Jr. housing a movement that placed third in the 1948 Geneva Observatory competition. Each would have been the cover lot for any just about any other watch auction, but it just so happened that they were part of the same sale. On paper, many would have assumed that the Clapton 2499 would sell for more than the Champion 2458 C but many would have been wrong. Champion's 2458 was the champion of the sale, bringing in over $4 million. The winner of the watch? Alfredo Paramico, who has since sold it. buying in dubai?
I am a newb. But I've recently made the decision to buy an AP and this will be my first watch. I don't have a whole ton of knowledge and have been reading online as much as I can. I'm planning on buying the Royal Oak Offshore w/ceramic bezel in 18kt rose gold... reasons are just that I like it.I've been checking online and shopping in person in Bangkok as I am traveling through Asia.Ceramic bezel was not in either official dealer here in Bangkok, only the rubberclad. This is listed online in the USA around $36k with grey market dealers. MSRP from AP is around $50k I believe, but it's being shown in these boutiques at $62,000. They of course instantly offer a 20% discount off of that 20% markup to bring you down to the AP MSRP.The best price I could squeeze out in person was around $44k for the rubberclad. By the time I got there and had read what people had to say long term with the rubberclad I decided to just move on to the ceramic bezel model. Is it worthwhile to try to shop for this
for the Patek lovers, this is a very rare super high end piece ...
First I would like to thank Jacques Degreef otherwise I could not share those pics. It was the first time in my life I saw a Patek 10 days tourbillon. This was already a good feeling. I can't describe how it felt when I was allowed to 'play' with it between 10.00 and 11.30 this morning. Those pics are the best I could do but believe me, this watch gives you shivers.I could always sell my house and buy this watch but I have a strange feeling my girlfriend would not like the idea LOLSo I better stop dreaming. Such a piece will always be out of my league.BUT, if you really like the looks and want something similar (without the 10 days power reserve and ofcourse without the tourbillon) you can always try the 5124.At the fraction of the price you get a very good looking dress watch.

AD offered me their first SS Pepsi
Over the past couple of years I've developed a wonderful relationship with my AD. He shoots me straight and takes care of me. I've gotten my choice of DaytonaC with minimal wait and several other pieces harder to obtain. No granted that VIP treatment did not happen over night but the more business I did with the more priority I was give. I get that, its business. You take care of your best and repeat customers. At any rate, got a call the other day asking if I wanted to be first on the list for the SS Pepsi. I declined, as I'm not a GMT man but greatly appreciated the offer and consideration. In our short conversation I did ask him how much interest the new SS Pepsi was generating. He said it was about like any other Basel release. He has had a few inquiries of course but wanted to give me the option of getting the watch before anyone else just passed it onto the grey market.
