In-Depth: The HODINKEE Guide To Buying Watches On eBay
(Last December, we published this article by Eric Wind – now a part of the team at Christie's New York – on buying watches on eBay. His observations are as relevant now as ever, and he gave us some of the best advice we'd seen on how to get your feet wet in vintage watches without taking a bath. We publish it today, a year later, for your reading pleasure. –Ed.) It’s one of my most closely guarded secrets: how to buy a great vintage watch on eBay. It’s the secret sauce of my weekly What’s Selling Where columns and today I am unveiling the recipe for you. Did I just overhype this? Probably, but here it goes anyways.Wisdom for Buying a Vintage Watch on eBayThere is no question that eBay can be the best venue for finding fresh-to-market vintage pieces at good prices. I have gotten most of my best pick-ups on eBay and basically always am on the hunt for what is out there. Here is my advice for what to think about whe
Breitling AD recommendation
Thinking of adding another B to my collection and wanted a recommendation for a good AD. Looking forward to the replies.
Bitten by the Speedy bug...but have a dilemma...
Looking to get my first Speedmaster, and for now, the only Omega in my collection...just don't know which one to get. I went to the AD today and they all sang to me...love the Speedmaster Professional with the sapphire crystal and transparent case back, love the classic and original looks of the Moonwatch professional with the hesalite crystal, and love the size, movement and date feature of the Moonwatch Co-Axial Chronograph with the 9300 movement. I can only get one...really undecided. Any and all suggestions are welcome! Also, is there any chance that the 9300 Moonwatch will be discontinued?
Nautilus vs Sub
I just recieved a PM requesting whether the 5711 possibly wore larger than a 116618 considering the fixed lugs on the Nautilus might be longer. They requested some wrist shots to determine the difference. The Nautilus actually wears a lot smaller than your 116618. I have a 16610LV and if anything the lugs are just a bit longer on the Sub than the Nautilus. The big difference however will be in the thickness of the watch. The 5711 is extremely thin when comparted to the 16610, and it will be even more so when compared to your 116618. The movement on the 5711 is only 3.3 mm thick and the case reflects this.So much so, that one should really check it out in person. I would consider the 5711 to be a very elegant sports watch, that may or may not appeal to some people. Most Patek ADs will have some form of Nautilus on hand, unfortunately not all will have a 5711 on hand. The case diameter and lug size will be the same for all versions, however the major diffference between the 5711 and other
GMT Questions and Ramblings
I've been lusting after a GMT for a year or so and finally got the green light from my wife to purchase a milestone watch this Summer. I will finish law school in May and (hopefully) pass the bar at the end of July, results in early August. Knowing this is a popular model, right after receiving the green light, I started in on the hunt with intent to purchase sometime before September 2018 (if I find a deal before then I am ready to jump on it, but no rush). I've been torn between a new BLNR and a 16710 Pepsi. I only have one AD nearby and they have never had a GMT in stock when I've stopped by, as such, I've never seen either a 16710 or the new ceramic GMT in the flesh. For case and bracelet comparisons, I have a M serial 16622 Yacht-Master. Back to the hunt, my wife and I were in Charlotte this weekend and we were able to stop by two ADs near our hotel. The first only had assorted DJs, precious metal Daytonas and a few smaller lady models. However, the second had a new, all black GMT
