Seiko Solar Watches
See in the image here in their most basic form, watches with Seiko Solar movements have been around since 1977. But now I think Seiko will start focusing on having Seiko Solar watches enter more of the world market (especially in higher-end forms). For most of the world, the predominant light-powered watch is the Citizen Eco-Drive. Citizen was clever about pushing their light powered watches as being more user-friendly than basic quartz watches.One of the main drawbacks of quartz watches is the need to change the batteries from time to time. Movements such as the Seiko Solar and Citizen Eco-Dive have batteries in the movements that are charged by photovoltaic cells in the watch. The lifespan of these movements (assuming they don't break or malfunction) should be close to one's lifespan. N.O.A Watches At Baselworld 2010
An underdog watch brand that I really like is N.O.A. Funny how Americans says the letters out (as it is actually an acronym) for "none of the above," but in Europe they seem to say it like it is a word. I met with N.O.A ("NOA") in Baselworld to check out their pieces and was really impressed. The presence the watches have is really interesting, and they are very comfortable to wear. Some of them are going to be an acquired taste, but few can say that they aren't pretty pieces. I have been especially interested in some of their more sporty pieces such as the Scyllis diver, and the prototype of their new Skandar watch (seen at the bottom here). These are just a sampling of their new pieces.NOA watches are very bold but fresh feeling in their design. The men's and women's models have a grace to them that isn't common in many avant garde watches. Chalk it up to good design and an attention for detail and fine materials. IWC Wins Reader Voted Best Luxury Watch Brand On Luxist
I recently nominated a few key luxury watch brands for a reader poll on Luxistwatches-dealer. The poll was to determine what brand people considered to be the top luxury brand. Not exactly a scientific study, but it is interested to see what people who read the world's top luxury blog had to say on the topic. It wasn't too difficult to consider the nominees. It wasn't a matter of who necessary made the best looking or most mechanically perfect watches, but rather about perception.As such, I made the obvious choices. The five nominees where Rolex, Patek Philippe, A. Lange & Sohne, Jaeger-LeCoultre, and IWC. Four Swiss and one German high end brand. Prices really all over the place, but brands that many, many people would know. Each brand has plenty of offerings over $20,000 and each brand has at least a good portion of their watches with in-house made movements.
