Breguet: Art & Innovation In Watchmaking Exhibit At Legion Of Honor, San Francisco
Whenever one of the oldest and most esteemed watch brands puts on an exhibit, it's worth paying attention. Breguet has been producing high-quality timepieces since 1775. Aside from conceiving the tourbillon, Abraham Louis Breguet C the company's founder C inspired generations of watchmakers. The son of John Arnold, one of the most celebrated English horologists whose name still decorates the dials of Arnold & Son watches, was Breguet's apprentice; the late great English master George Daniels was a Breguet devotee; his protg, the Isle of Man-based Roger Smith is clearly inspired by Breguet's aesthetic. This year, at the Breguet: Art and Innovation in Watchmaking exhibit, which opened on September 19th, 2015, at the California Palace of the Legion of Honor in San Francisco, we celebrate the mechanical miracles born of Breguet's genius and the 240th year of Breguet's existence. Girard-Perregaux 1966 Perpetual Calendar Watch
It is deceptively simple and pretty. I think I actually prefer Girard-Perregaux's use of minimalism over a brand like Vacheron Constantin. This is their 1966 Perpetual Calendar watch with an automatic in-house movement and also a moon phase indicator. A lovely thing in 18k white or rose gold. Don't be fooled by its demure looks, it still costs around $50,000.Read my full article on the Girard-Perregaux 1966 Perpetual Calendar watch here at Haute Living.
Hands-On: General Douglas MacArthur's Personal Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso, Complete With Lacquered Monogram
In April of this year, while searching through an Antiquorum catalog, we discovered one of the coolest examples of one of the coolest watches of all time – a Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso owned by none other than General Douglas MacArthur. We've always known the Reverso to be the choice of several great men, but it was unknown that General MacArthur in particular wore the watch. We knew the MacArthur Reverso would have its fans when it came up for sale, and we were right – it sold for over 87,000 CHF. What we didn't know at the time was that the watch would be purchased by the company that originally made it, and we would have the chance to see it in the metal some months later. 1 OF 2 As you can see, the mid-1930s Reverso, retailed Golay Fils & Stahl, features a rich black dial and lacquered monogramming on the case back that reads "D MAC A" – easily one of the coolest uses of a Reverso case back we've come across. The watch, interes
