Crowdfunding Follow-Up
Over the past few months we here at worn&wound have featured a number of watch brand hopefuls who were using some form of crowdfunding in an effort to get themselves off the ground. This format for funding a project has exploded in the past couple of years and it is a great fit for watches projects. They target the audience that wants the product and if there is enough response, it gets made. Hopefully. Time to look back and see how the projects we have featured here have faired.Rossling & Co. – KickstarterThe idea behind Rossling & Co. was that of a simple, slim dress watch with an affordable price and a versatile design. The project was looking for a reasonable pledge range from $119 to $139 which would provide the contributor with one watch and strap. The company’s funding goal was $19,200 and they were able to successfully blow that number out of the water with an ending total of $170,002 from 1,280 backers. Definitely a job well done. Introducing: The Patek Philippe 5170R C The Classic Manually Wound Patek Goes Rose Gold
Okay, so nothing super new here, but this is the type of thing that will get a hardcore PP guy going C the 5170 has been shown in rose gold! The 5170 is, for the uninitiated, the classic manually wound, two-register, in-house chronograph from Patek Philippe. You can read a full review of it here. So what's the deal for the 5170R? Essentially you have the same watch as the last 5170G with black dial and leaf hands, but now in a rose case with silvery opaline dial (5170R-001), and black dial (5170R-010). The 5170G with white pulsation scale is now discontinued, though the black Breguet dial is still in limited production. 1 OF 2 We've got the same superb in-house, column-wheel chronograph, that same 39.4 mm case, and all the fixings you'd expect with a Patek of this stature. Price will be exactly the same as the 5170G, or just north of $80,000. More here and here. 2 OF 2 Follow us during Baselworld on HODINKEE Live, available on desktop, mobile, or in the free

Millennials asking questions
While talking watches with different demographics, I can't help but notice the following opinions over and over again, especially from young educated individuals that are less susceptible to any hype:1) Why does Rolex produce diving watches that can go to depths humans can't, when all it does is negatively affect everyday wearability2) Why would you drill an extra hole in the case (HEW), when the few people that actually need one are unlikely to dive with a $10k+ watch3) Why would you make brightly bi-coloured bezels, when Rolex needs to project elegance and class4) Why would you continue to produce so called sports and tool watches, when people doing sports wear Apple, Fitbit, Suunto, etc. and don't want to worry about their watch while doing so ( substitute your own is it safe activity). In addition, a smart watch provides significantly more functionality.5) Why does Rolex stick to obsolete looking cases, instead of designing with simple, modern, and elegant curves that project c
