Initial Impressions: Maratac Pilot Watch
We've talked a lot about the Maratac Pilot watch on worn&wound. It features a Miyota 8245 21 jewel automatic movement, domed sapphire crystal, great looks and sells for just $200. Let me say that again, its sells for just $200. That's an unreal price for a watch with this styling and components, so it wasn't too hard to convince myself to pick one up.*Check out our full review of the Maratac Pilot watch here. The Maratac Pilot comes in a simple "watch taco" case with a black Maratac mil-series strap. The watch taco is actually quite nice, with a nylon shell, rigid construction and soft interior. This is a great bonus item to receive with the watch, and I have used it several times when traveling. The strap received is also very nice, which is consistent with my experience with other Maratac straps. It feels well constructed and features matte black hardware. The Maratac itself meets and exceeds every expectation once you get it out of the packaging. While holding true to the traditio
How the Royal Oak Watch Became a Cult Classic
From the NY Times (By ALEX WILLIAMS JAN. 4, 2016) :Many iconic companies have tried to revolutionize their industries through groundbreaking design, only to end up taking a very public face-plant: Ford, with the Edsel; Apple, with the Newton; Google, with Google Glass. That was the sort of risk that Audemars Piguet, the venerable Swiss watchmaker, took when it unveiled its Royal Oak in 1972. With its stark geometry and stainless-steel case, the futuristic Royal Oak seemed to anticipate the unloved DeLorean sports car more than the future of fine watchmaking. And we know what happened with the DeLorean. (Yes, Marty McFly took one back to the future; the company also failed, just two years after the first cars were produced.)That is why the success of the Royal Oak is so striking. Four decades later, the love-it-or-hate-it Royal Oak has become the ultimate cult watch, with vintage pieces commanding high prices at auction, new releases popping up on television shows and endless high-end var

In house or not?
Is a watch having in house movement a plus, a must or you don't care? Some of the most seemed and valuable watches don't have in house movements, most highly collectable Pams don't and just have ETA, the AP Jumbo has a JLC base movement, the Patek 5970 and 5070 have Lemania base movements, it doesn't mean that in house the movement will be better, some great watches have non in house movements. So for me if a watch's movement is not in house it's absolutely not a deal breaker, but I do prefer one which does have it as for me an in-house movement means that the manufacture has reached a certain level in the horological art and is capable of making their own watches from A to Z without any outside help.I know that usually when people start to be interested in watches if they go for pieces 5K and up it's obligatory to have the in house movement, but more experienced watch lovers understand that it's just a part of the process and that even if the brands get movements from other companies th
