Antiquorum to Auction Patek Philippe Calibre 89
On November 14 and 15 at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Geneva, Antiquorum will hold its 35th anniversary sale, and among the more than 300 timepieces to be offered is one that should make any horology aficionado breathe a bit faster… a Patek Philippe Calibre 89 from the Matsuda Collection. With 33 complications, this is the world’s most complicated timepiece. Patek created only 4 examples of the Calibre 89: one each in yellow, pink, and white gold, and one in platinum. This piece, lot 364, is in yellow gold. It was previously sold by Antiquorum on April 9, 1989 in the “Art of Patek Philippe” sale to commemorate the brand’s 150th anniversary. The presale estimate is 4.5 to 5 million Swiss francs. Previews will be held in Hong Kong November 6 & 7, and in Geneva November 12 to 15. For additional information about the sale, including high-resolution images, visit antiquorum. You may also click the image below to view a larger version.
Crazy illogical things one does...
So i have always craved the new Rolex Daytona Ceramic Bezel white dial and after months of waiting/networking/calling - finally found an AD who would sell me one. When I was waiting for the AD to pack up the watch, I was roamed around and came upon a 26740ST Elephant; it didn't jump out at me at first, but it was a thing of beauty. Went home with the Daytona - but kept thinking about the Elephant. Long story short, i ended up selling the Daytona at 2nd hand prices after having only worn it for just 2 days and buying the Elephant. Not trying to start a flame war as I still think the Daytona is a beautiful piece, but sometimes, you just love what you love. Hopefully I am not the only one who has turned their backs on common sense for the AP they love..
My AP Diver died!
My 1 year AP Diver died.Im running with it, i kept running at looking at the watch. I think to myself:i have been running for a long time, but why its only 10 minutes Im so tired but I keep running. After several time I realized the watch has died! I wind it and its still not working. I have many watches like rolex or the ETA tag heuer, they never had any problem with it.Its still under warranty, Im going to service it soon, I hope its free.Im thinking why the high brand and expensive watches like AP can be died by only 1 year of using it? while the cheaper brand with ETA movement doesnt have any problems.Does AP watch should not be used while running? To break the rules you must first master them!
Platinum: 5098P Gondolo vs. 5196P Calatrava
I am interested in your comments and observations about these two platinum, manual wind PPs. I own a Rolex Yachtmaster Blue and want a PP to wear for business and formal occasions. I am a professional in early 50s. I am leaning towards the 5980P Gondolo due to dial face and rarity. I also like the story behind the Gondolo Club. Thanks,David
Advice on a 5396
I have been considering a 5146G for some time and then happened to try on a 5396G while visiting NY last month. I am thinking now, that is the watch for me (looking for a long term PP...not something to flip in a year or two). Really caught my eye as sleek and a modern classic piece. Also liked the white face over the cream face on the 5146.The 5396 to my eye seems more business or formal (but hoping I can dress it down a bit with maybe a mat strap) vs the 5146. Not looking for an everyday piece but also dont want it to be too limiting. Any thoughts on this?I think the 5146 is and will always be seen as a classic. Question is what about the 5396? Crystal balls out please! I know its person choice but does the PP community here think the 5396 a long term keeper or will it fade off as a miss in a few more years time? Or should I just stick with the more tried and true 5146?Thanks in advance for any advice or commentary. Borrowed a few pics just for reference.
