BaselWorld 2013: The New Nomos Series 38 Watches
Case size is crucial in watch design as it affects not only comfort, but also proportion and the everyday practicality of the piece. With that in mind, it is remarkable what a difference a few millimeters can make when up-sizing a smaller model to suit a larger wrist. With the new Series 38, Nomos Glashutte has breathed new life into their Orion, Tangente and Ludwig models, while also introducing a 38mm version of the Orion with a grey dial. While likely still considered small by many tastes, the Series 38 is an exciting update that I was eager to see in person as Nomos exhibits a style and design philosophy that has always spoken to my tastes and a slightly larger version of the lovely Orion is definitely worth a closer look. The 38 Series is comprised of four new models, three of which are essentially up-sized versions of their 35mm older siblings. The totally new model is the Orion 38 Grau and it is a design that is instantly recognizable as a Nomos, but varied in its use of a nicely
Creating The Horological Machine: An Interview With MB&F Founder Max Bsser Part 2
Contributed by David BredanRead part 1 of the interview here.MB&F has been playing a major role on the stage of high-end watch making for several years now. However, just like with every blockbuster's premier, the public's keen attention?is there, but the limelight only shows the final production; and who wouldn't ever wonder just what's going on behind the scenes? In the first segment of this three-part interview, Maximilan Bsser told us about exactly that! We found out how he got involved?in the seemingly sleepy world of watch making, and we gained a unique?insight into just how difficult it is to get a main character's position. Now, in Part 2 we get to see how he managed to continue after all the massive early challenges, what are his fundamental (and as we will see, very unique to the watch making world) values and motives behind every new act of MB&F, the obstacles these create, how and why in his opinion the public's perception has changed about their work, and we receiv
De GRISOGONO Otturatore Watch Is Four-Faced
After some years of development De GRISOGONO released a fantastic new caliber in a polarizing new timepiece with a name I can barely pronounce. Try saying "Otturatore" a few times really fast. I am sure that means something sexually satisfying in Italian, but this is a Swiss brand through and through. De GRISOGONO is a rare band in the US, but one that has a lot of cool and complex pieces. While a lot of brands like to call themselves "avant garde, " I have to say that De GRISOGONO actually is.What makes me sad is how expensive this watch is. It is about 69,100 - 71,100 Swiss Francs depending on the style. It doesn't need to be that expensive, even though the brand did put a lot of work in to the movement development. Offer a steel-cased version for $20,000 and then at least you have my attention more. Much of that 85,000 Swiss Franc amount is going to be justified in the chunky 18k rose or white gold case - that surely uses a lot of metal. The quizzical case is about 45mm wide and abo
