Ancon M26 Tank Hands-On
You shouldn’t name a watch after a war machine without being pretty sure it lives up to it. Luckily, that’s not an issue with the Ancon M26 Tank, which is amongst the largest and beefiest watches we’ve had the pleasure of testing out. As with the Sea Shadow we looked at previously, the Tank is a hodge-podge of referential designs in a massive case that is meant to aesthetically emote mid century military machines. Whether a battleship or a tank, these watches are low on subtly and high on style, mixing raw materials and dark colors to make something unapologetically masculine and fun to wear. For a big ass bronze watch with a domed sapphire crystal and a Miyota 9015 movement, the Ancon M26 Tank is also decently priced at $839.Case: CuSn8 BronzeMovement: Miyota 9015Dial: GreenLume: YesCrystal: Domed Sapphire CrystalStrap: Italian Leather + CanvasWater Res.: 200MDimensions: 45 x 56mmThickness: 13 – 17 mmLug Width: 26mmCrown: Screw down 8 x 5mmWarranty: YesWeight:
Introducing: The Sarpaneva Northern Lights Limited Edition In A Smaller, Red Gold Case (Interview, D
Did you look up at the sky last night? If not, you just missed a totally amazing lunar eclipse. It was not just any eclipse – it was a complete lunar eclipse with a super moon, or perigee-syzygy of the Earth-Moon-Sun system, as the astronomers like to call it. Of course a syzygy – alignment of the sun, the earth, and the moon – happens every new and full moon, but to have an eclipse when the full moon is at its closest to the Earth is something that will not happen again until October 8, 2033. For the occasion of what is also referred to as a blood moon, HODINKEE sent journalist Mr. Anders Modig to moon-phase, moon-face maestro Stepan Sarpaneva, the independent watchmaker based in Helsinki, Finland. Just before the eclipse, Sarpaneva was freaking out. 1 OF 7 “In general I am super-sensitive to the moon, strange vibrations. This whole week I have really felt the moon rising. And now there is an eclipse coming? I don’t want to think about it;
Aviation wristwatches: "Time Flies" article from AOPA
Thought you guys and gals might like this. It was written by Thomas A. Horne and published in AOPA magazine.Take a look around. It seems like every wrist sports a huge, thick, clunky-looking watch. How did this fashion come about, you may wonder?The answer lies in the intertwining of aviation and watchmaking history. It’s interesting to note that before aviation came along in the early 1900s, there were no wristwatches to speak of. Pocket watches were the rule for men; women wore watches pinned on their blouses, or as a pendant. For those who couldn’t afford to buy a watch, the town clock or church bells served as timekeepers, or a factory whistle, or the family grandfather clock if you were fortunate enough to have one.The first recorded mention of a watch made specifically for pilots came in 1906. That’s when Brazilian Alberto Santos-Dumont, previously a balloon pilot, flew his first airplane, the 14-bis, before an audience in France. Santos-Dumont kept track of the
What is your favorite Nautilus and why?
Like everyone understood my favorite is by far the 5712, love the dial with that amazing blue, and the fact that it has a few complications, the PR indicator is always useful especially that the power reserve is not very big, at the salon they told me around 38 hours.Another thing I love is the moon indicator, can't say it's the most useful thing, except if you are a werwolf but it's nice to look at.Plus I love the micro rotor movement.My second favorite would be 5726/1A-001, the annual calendar is super useful, but if after getting my 5712 and maybe an Aquanaut, if I had the financial means I would probably get the 5712 in WG, the silver dial is beautiful, maybe not as much as the blue but still awesome.In third place would be the 5990, the dial is quite nice, and the GMT always useful since I travel quite often.The 5711 is nice but can't say I would get it, there are many Nautilus and Aquanauts that would come first, I'm sure the blue dial is amazing, but in real just saw the white d
