Historical Perspectives: Just Because: An Original Zenith A386 El Primero Chronograph And The Awesom
The watch on the left is the awesome Zenith El Primero Striking Tenth chronograph, a watch we reviewed in detail here and absolutely loved (sidenote, if you've never seen one of these in action, you have to watch the video here).? The watch at right looks a lot like the 2010 Striking Tenth, doesn't it? It should, because it's the reference from which it was birthed.?You see, the Striking Tenth borrowed its tri-color dial from the original El Primero chronograph from 1969 - reference A386.? This early automatic chronograph (some would say it's the first self-winding chronograph, some would say the first high-beat self-winding chronograph, and others, the first self-winding integrated chronograph) is something of a cult classic, as Zenith themselves say no more than 2000 examples were ever produced.? The tri-color dial of the A386 has since become Zenith's trademark dial configuration, but did you know there is more than just aesthetics behind its design? The story goes that rey was chos
AP not so popular in Japan?
Having been in Tokyo for the past week or so, and spent the last weekend browsing watches, I noticed its still all about Rolex. I see an occasional AP here and there, but they don't seem to be nearly as popular as Rolex.I am hoping there are any Japanese members that care to chime in as to why this is? How is AP seen in Japan?I have thought about 2 possible reasons:1: Value retention for Rolex is better2: Brand awareness for Rolex is betterPlease feel free to share your opinions. Ps: I'll be in Japan for a while, in case anyone wants to meet up? I'm in Tokyo.
And in other news...
Amid the onslaught of Speed Master variants there was another new announcement at Basel World last night! The Globemaster, the worlds first 'Master Chronometer' the first Omega to go through it's new METAS testing.Oh and it's got a pie pan dial!.omegawatches/baselwor...n#!globemaster
Panerai Display Box
Anyone else have pics with multiple Panerai 's in one shot? Several of your own or maybe from a display like this? I took this shot today of the Panerai display box at the Montage Hotel in Beverly Hills. Love these two together. Pam512 and Pam514 are a sweet combo. uploadfromtaptalk1407480921739.jpg
Should I buy it or not?
I entered the Rolex world only a couple of months ago and since then I've been addicted! By no means I'm an expert but I learned a lot about Rolex, luxury watches and it's balue...... thanks to TRF sand its membersMy 14 year old boy picked the habit from me and can tell movements in different Rolex models, knows the lingo and has been obsessed with RolexHe was with me over the weekend at the AD when I picked up my LVc and was mesmerized by the YM40 Blue dial.I'm thinking of buying it for him (without telling him) to give it to him for his graduation 1- before prices go up2- before it gets discontinued (possibly)I raise my kids to earn what they get and appreciate what they have, not to get thing easily but this time I'm so tempted to get it even though my wife thinks this is spoiling . He is a very responsible young man and no where near spoiled! What would you guys do? Get it or let him work and Buy his first Rolex with his own money?
