Applications Open for 2012 Rolex Awards
Rolex has announced the opening of applications to the 2012 Rolex Awards for Enterprise. The awards were established in 1976 to provide funding and recognition to individuals whose projects bring significant benefits to their communities and to the wider world. Five Laureates will be selected by an independent Jury of experts who will meet early in 2012. Each Laureate receives $100,000 to advance their project, plus appreciation and publicity for their work through international advertising campaigns. Each Laureate also receives a Rolex timepiece. As ever, we are seeking forward-looking men and women who are tackling the challenges of our age and who have innovative projects, said Rebecca Irvin, head of philanthropy at Rolex. We look forward to receiving many wonderful proposals from around the world. The Rolex Awards are open to anyone of any age or nationality whose groundbreaking projects are helping to expand the knowledge of our world and improve the quality of life on the plane
Vacheron Constantin SIHH 2010 Preview: Thin is In
Vacheron Constantin is known for producing some of the world’s thinnest timepieces, and for 2010 they are introducing two new wristwatches in the Historiques collection that confirm the brand’s expertise in the arena of the ultra-thin. The Historique Ultra-fine 1955 measures only 4.1mm thick, making it the world’s thinnest mechanical hand-wound watch. The Historique Ultra-fine 1968 is a square, ultra-thin automatic. The 36mm 1955 is presented in 4N 18k pink gold. Though an homage to the past, the 1955 is a modern design with 30 meter water resistance, a sapphire display back, and a titanium casing circle to improve the rigidity of this wisp for the wrist. Beneath the opaline silver-colored gold dial lies caliber 1003, which at a mere 1.64mm is the world’s thinnest. To celebrate its 55th anniversary in 2010, the movement has been reborn with 18k gold mainplate and bridges. The 21.1mm-diameter movement consists of 117 parts and beats at 18,000 vph. Marvin M109 Watch Offers Handsome Looks, Value, Unavailability In The US
I swear, this watch has no real name, just "model m109.14.43.65." That looks almost like an IP address. Marvin refers to it as part of the M109 collection. So for the purposes of this article, I will just call it the Marvin watch or M109 (even though there are other M109 watches in various colors and styles). They should have called it something cool like the "Squaropolis." Yea, I just made that name up. The company shares the story of many current watch companies: it started a long time ago (1850). Died, then came back via a name purchase. This was about a year ago, and the company was wise enough to have a wide enough range of prices to make them accessible. Their watches are prices from about $400 - $4000, and they offer both men's and women's watches with mechanical or quartz movements. This particular Marvin watch is pretty cool, with a nice design. Actually, the design is mostly Bell & Ross (dial and numeral design), Glycine (compare logos, even though the Marvin and Glycine l
Introducing: The Montblanc Collection Villeret Tourbillon Cylindrique Pocket Watch 110 Years Edition, And Navigator Unique Piece Nautical Clock
The navigation theme has been a pretty prominent one in Montblanc’s recent production – probably most visibly, in the watches named for the famous Portuguese explorer, Vasco da Gama – but this year Montblanc’s pretty much pulled out all the stops in making something that speaks both to the history of marine chronometers, as well as showcasing the artisanal side of watchmaking in the Montblanc portfolio as it exists at the Minerva movement manufacture (the counterpart to the somewhat larger scale production facility that Montblanc maintains in Le Locle). The Montblanc Collection Tourbillon Cylindrique Pocket Watch 110 Years Edition (with which Montblanc challenges Audemars Piguet for Brand That Gives The Longest Names To Its Watches) and the Montblanc Collection Tourbillon Cylindrique Pocket Watch 110 Years Edition Unique Piece (ditto) are triple time zone, world-time tourbillon pocket watches of really incredible beauty; the latter is paired with a pretty
Can anyone give me any info on this OMEGA Constellation? PART 2
Hi, got this OMEGA Constellation Pie-Pan Dial handed down from my dad, looks gold plated to me, with the gold finish wearing off. Guessing 1960s - early 1970s. Couldn't find a any models or bands similar. If i was to recondition this like my rolex overhaul few years back, is it going to set me back another $800 like the rolex? Maybe it's not worth overhauling at all?? Would they add more gold polishing??? Thanks for looking!!
