Top 10 Gold Watches
Gold watches represent wealth and status, and in a sense, it has always been that way. Having said that, watch makers used gold as a case material for very practical reasons in a historical sense. Gold as a metal has some interesting properties, from being easily machined to being heavily tarnish-resistant (it also takes a polish really well). When gold is mixed with other metals to produce alloys, it mixes some of the beneficial properties of gold with the hardness of those other metals. Historically, most gold-cased watches have been either 14k or 18k gold. 18k gold watches are a relatively recent phenomenon, having become popular starting in the early 1980s, when gold prices began to increase, allowing watch makers to add more gold but also increase the prices of their gold watches. In the business world, gold watches have had an interesting history. During the 20th century, it was the goal of many people to work at a company for many years finally to be gifted a gold watch upon reti
Baselworld 2013: The Watch Content You Demand
For watches-dealer coverage of Baselworld 2013 watches and other new products, we are going to follow in our own footsteps based on what seemed like effective?coverage of SIHH 2013. What does that mean? Well, starting this year, we thought it would be interesting to focus first on covering those products and brands that watches-dealer audience members said they wanted to read about. That way, the community is able to request what they see first from the show.Once again, we will focus on covering the show on the watches-dealer website, as well as the watches-dealer YouTube channel, watches-dealer Instagram feed, Twitter, and most importantly on the watches-dealer Facebook page. If you follow the Facebook page you'll pretty much get all the content in one place, which includes links to new articles here, as well as YouTube videos and random pictures we upload on Instagram throughout the show. Apparently, we've started a trend, as we are seeing everyone and their grandmother's watch blog
Only Watch 2011 Auction Pieces Hands-On
Last night here in Los Angeles I was invited to view the traveling roadshow which is the Only Watch 2011 timepiece collection. On an arduous trip around the globe the 40 or so watches up for auction later this month in Monaco will have made only two stops in the United States before being bid on by those interested in acquiring these one-of-a-kind pieces.I began my coverage of Only Watch 2011 here where I logged each of the entrant pieces. The every-other-year event asked brands to "play the game" as they call it. Which entails brands offering totally unique watch creations donated to be bid on for charity. Collectors and those with a lust for wrist candy eagerly await the event now operated by Antiquorum. The venue selected to show off the pieces was Westime Beverly Hills. At a special evening event I was able to view collector's eying the pieces and showing off their own wrist treasures. Packed tight, the boutique store was brimming with a welcome energy that has been absent from the
Introducing The Piaget Altiplano Scrimshaw, With A Dial Made Of 40,000 Year Old Mammoth Tusk (Live P
A few weeks ago, we gave you a hands-on look at the Piaget 900P, the thinnest mechanical watch in the world. But this isn't the only new watch Piaget is showing at SIHH. The Altiplano Scrimshaw features a dial made from fossilized mammoth ivory that is then engraved with a map of the Eastern Hemisphere using traditional scrimshaw techniques. Each dial takes 65 hours to produce and these watches really are unique little works of art. 2 OF 15 The Altiplano Scrimshaw starts simply enough – a 38mm Altiplano case in either white or pink gold with an in-house 400P ultra-thin calibre. While these are admirable as-is, this watch is all about the special dial. A piece of preserved mammoth ivory (approximately 40,000 years old) is shaped into a dial that comes in around 1.7mm thick. From there, the dial is engraved with a map and a compass rose using traditional Scrimshaw techniques.Scrimshaw is a special type of engraving that can be traced back to the Inuits and other t
Please help me choose my very first AP.....
Hello AP lovers here. Please help me pick my very first AP. I have narrowed it down into the two as below.- black dial: ROO Chronograph Themes H series.- White dial: ROO Navy Themes I series.I have Daytona white in steel, Two tone DJ, and Omega Planet ocean Ceramic 42 (black bezel with orange letter). I'm usually in casual and rarely dress up. I'm torn dead half and half- I like classic sports look of the black dial whereas I don't mind having little flashiness of the Navy(to me)I understand I is newer than H series. My research has founded that ROO Navy is arguably the least popular ROO series which is hard to believe. Any advise/tip would be appreciated. Thanks and looking forward to your input.
