Mondaine Stop2Go Swiss Railways Watch With 2 Second Delay
I was probably standing at a train station in Switzerland for a half dozen times before I first realized a peculiar thing about the clocks. The design of the clocks has been memorialized in Mondaine watches, and later in Apple devices, as they've "borrowed" the design in some versions of iOS. On a white background, the incredibly legible clocks have black hand hour and minute indicators along with a red seconds hand tipped with a large circle. The strange part is that when the seconds hand reaches "O," it just stops for a full two seconds, and then jumps ahead to keep telling the time. This doesn't mean the clocks run slow. The seconds hand quickly moves to catch up with correct time. So the logical question is why? According to Mondaine, the Swiss SBB Railwaya clocks have been doing this for about 70 years. The story starts with a Swiss desire for accuracy - naturally. In the 1940s Switzerland wanted the clocks in each of their train stations to be synchronized. If you are a train hist
One week and I am confused but delighted with my 15400
This thread may sound like the ramblings of a broken mind, but I am wondering if any have felt the same. I have now had my new AP Ro 15400 for a week, and am loving it more each day.Maybe my brain was off the mark but in my thinking the RO was a sporty dress watch, and subconsciously I always thought of it as a historical 36mm watch in the same spirit as a Datejust or other SS dress watches. I viewed the Offshore as the big sports watches in the AP family. Having worn the 15400 now for a week, and as you do, constantly looked at my 7.5in wrist I have come to the conclusion that the 15400 is closer in spirit and size to the ROO than a traditional SS dress watch. This is not bad thing, but I have finally realised that this is a big watch on my wrist! The black dial has really gown on me which like all AP dials changes colour from black to silver to grey depending on the angle and light hitting it.No scratches yet, and it has been on a mini holiday as well this week, so must be doing some
Where to buy straps???
Hi,I've finally made my dive into Panerai and couldn't be happier. I chose the PAM388 as I wear a suit daily to work so the dressier style fits. Date was a necessity as well, very happy. However, the Rad only comes with the black alligator leather strap which I love. I obviously need at least a brown strap for blue suits, etc. 1) Where do most folks buy their Panerai straps? I'm OK with going direct, but obviously pricey. 2) Any good advice on how to obtain one of the strap changing tools that come with the Luminor models? Thanks in advance. Cheers,Jimmy
Are we as a community too focused on value retention?
With what seems like about 1/3rd of the most recent threads being about whether X will hold its value, whether X will drop or increase in value, I've started to wonder as a community, have we become too hyper focused on value retention at the expense of our enjoyment of our watches, and other pieces we may like, but won't buy because we will take a bath on them.Plenty of things we enjoy in this world lose some (or all) of their value once enjoyed. Cars are a good example. Furniture, clothes, etc., all of that stuff practically plummets once used even one time. But we buy them because we enjoy (or need) them. And why should watches be any different? Why are we as a community seemingly so fearful of losing even a penny on what we pay for watch? Yes, I get that they are a luxury good, and that it's not a great feeling to lose money on something we've shelled out dearly for, but again, there's lots of luxuries where we spend money, enjoy thoroughly and have no residual value to show at the
