My First Grail Watch: Francois-Paul Journe
Welcome back to an original watches-dealer feature, "My First Grail Watch." In this series, we ask prominent people in the watch industry about the first timepiece that they lusted after. ?Today, we're talking with Francois-Paul Journe, who heads up his eponymous brand, F.P. Journe. ?Coincidentally, he's just celebrated 30 years with the company, so our interview could not have occurred at a better time.watches-dealer (ABTW): Who are you, and what is your relationship to the watch industry?Francois-Paul Journe (FPJ): I consider myself as a mechanical engineer and watch constructor above all - of course, I am a watchmaker as well. It is more than a passion, it is my life! I believe I am one of the only watchmakers to continue producing watches in the same manner and with the same respect as it used to be done when horology was a science. There are fundamental values in high horology that pertain from the last 250 years that needs to be respected. I mark it as a point of honor to continue
SIHH 2012 Watch Show Summary: Hello China, Goodbye China
SIHH is a bit like the automobile traffic in Italy. It is crowded and there is only the semblance of organization. Despite a series of reasons why you might thing the entire system should not work, it does. The mania of a trade show convention is ironically melded with the attempt at having a high society event. The contradictions of the show shadow the very industry it serves - and somehow we love it for that. By the way, a shout out to IWC for their incredibly intricate booth design. No detail was spared to make their booth look like a bona-fide Hollywood set on board an aircraft carrier complete with a half jet, fog machines, uniforms, and of course pilot watches.Leaving the 2012 show I have a number of things to report. The most important thing to remember is that 2012 does not represent the plans of 2011. Watch products generally take about three years to plan and develop. For that reason SIHH 2012 is really about what was going on in 2009 and a bit after. At that time the economy
Sinn 103 St Flieger Chronograph Review
The Sinn Flieger 103 line is a staple of the brand's collection, and features a number of models with broad variation in design, complication and finishing. The 103 St we're reviewing is arguably the most simple and classically designed of them all, with base Valjoux 7750 movement, polished case and acrylic crystal. Other 103 models expand on the line's core design to include titanium cases, GMT functionality, sapphire crystal and, of course, Sinn's signature technologies such as DIAPAL (lubricant free escapement) and Ar-Dehumidifying which prevents moisture from building within the watch case as it ages. Even the 103 Classic, modeled after the original 103 A of the 1960's now features proprietary technology. These more sophisticated enhancements have become a calling card for Sinn since the brand was sold in 1994 from Helmut Sinn, its founder, to Lothar Schmidt. For a complete list of in-house technologies, please see Sinn's website. The 103 reviewed here has strong roots to the vintag
