Close-Up: Ulysse Nardin Freak Phantom
Ulysse Nardin made the watch cognoscenti sit up and take notice back in 2001, when it unveiled its wildly unconventional Freak watch, one of the first timepieces to use silicon in key parts of its movement. The Freak Phantom, introduced at Baselworld 2013, continues that tradition of innovation and, well, freakishness. The original Ulysse Nardin Freak, which was the first timepiece to use silicon escapement wheels, also turned heads with its unprecedented design, with no traditional dial, crown or hands. Instead, the watch and its movement were designed so that the movement itself, would rotate in a manner that could indicate the time. The watch has undergone many evolutions since then, including a version that was the first-ever watch to use Ulysse Nardin’s patented “DiamonSil” material, a type of diamond-coated silicon. Buying Watches In Newport, Rhode Island: Grenon's Of Newport
Welcome back to an watches-dealer original series, where we discuss important stores that sell watches all over the world. Each store we profile has an interesting story to tell about where they operate and who they sell to. Whether you buy watches from brick and mortar retailers or prefer to buy watches online, these are the stores that help shape our watch culture around the globe. There is a long list of stores to cover, but if there is a retail location in your favorite city that we simply can't miss, let us know in the comments below.Where to buy watches in Newport, Rhode Island?Back in 1992, while Ray Grenon was in college, he worked for a store called "The Best of Times" in Rochester, NY. They had a case of watches that were $9.99, a case of watches that were $19.99 and so on. Lots of Timex products and Swatch. Their high end was Seiko LaSalle, Bulova and Citizen. Ray reports that it was a fantastic experience which started him on his journey which resulted in opening Grenon's o
Prospective AP Owner
I recently posted another thread asking about the Royal Oak vs a Sub C for daily wear. I'm getting closer to going for a RO, but I wanted to see if anyone had feedback aboutwait for it.AP resale value.I'm buying to keep it so it's not a #1 priority, but I would like to know that if I HAVE to sell for one reason or another that I won't take a complete bath. Would a mint AP RO 15400, gotten from a trusted dealer at a decent discount from MSRP, be difficult to sell off if I needed to? Of course I'd lose something but what is the market like for preowned AP? Nothing is like SS Rolex, or Patek, but what about a Royal Oak. I've done some search on the bay and on the forums, but it's hard for me to tell how many sell. It's really just a piece of mind thing. Anyone have an idea?
Help Neded - 1975 Omega De Ville
Hey guys,This past weekend my father was speaking to an old friend and the topic of watches came up. Not sure how one thing led to another, but his friend offered to send him an old Omega that he had sitting in a drawer. He mentioned that it didn't work, but my father said he would like to see it.I was worried that it might be fake, but it arrived today and it seems to be authentic. The watch itself seems fine despite not working, however the leather strap seems to be aftermarket and added later on. The strap is labelled Speidel, is 18mm and stamped Hong Kong. The booklet is dated August 1st, 1975 and cost 1600 rupees which was $161 dollars. I guess that seems about right, but again, I'm not sure.If any Omega experts could chime in, I would really appreciate it. I couldn't get to the movement because it seems to go in from the front and I have no idea what I'm doing.I'm wondering if it should even be serviced or sent to someone in an attempt to get it running again. Not sure what that w
Pam 90 stops while on winder
Ive had my watch since new for a few years now. I rotate my watches so I keep them on a winder so I can grab and go.My Pam seems to stop winding now, or takes a lot more to give it juice. The panerai is the only watch that keeps stopping while on the winder(quad) and none of the other watches lose time or power on there. All wind both ways in their sequence.Even today, Ive been wearing the watch for almost 6 hours and its only half charged(thank you power reserve marker). Sometimes it wont even be 3/4ths charged by the time I take it off after about 14 hours of wearing.I dont feel the wobble anymore either. Is it really time for service already?
